Help needed with abscess that came out of skin????
Ok , so instead of highjacking ny's thread I figured I'd make my own. Susey's abscess came out of her skin, I'll try and give you a visual, say you are holding a hoof like you're cleaning it, and right behind the frog where you start up the leg, like behind the ankle there is a hole. Her hoof is soft and quite nasty looking at the back of her frog and hoof and the hole still has watery nasty stuff coming out of it. She was swollen starting last wednesday and it broke out on saturday. I put Icthammol on it and wrapped it and have been cleaning with peroxide since. Sunday there was this huge ball of white/peachy colored stuff hanging out of the hole, which I scraped off. Now it's just a hole that never stops draining. Is there anything else I should or could be doing???? Her hoof is still soft, not hardening up yet. And this isn't normal for an abscess correct<they normally come out of the hoof I've never seen one do this before and my dads a farrier.
I will not change my horse with any that treads on four pasterns. he bounds from the earth, as if his entrails were hairs..When I bestride him, I soar, he trots the air; the earth sings when he touches it; Williams Shakespeare, "Henry V"

I have one coming out, at some point...... hard to tell when they'll "be in touch" my handy dandy farrier father is coming over sunday so he'll be able to give his take, I just wanted to see if anyone else had experience with one coming out that way before or had any tips?

Soak it in Epsom salts. Then take a syringe (no needle) and fill it with betadine (povidone iodine). Put the nipple of the syringe in the "hole" and sluice the betadine into the cavity. Repeat until you get some betadine back out. Then pack across the hole with Furacin (nitrafurazone) mixed with sugar. Cover with a thick block of absorbent cotton, and wrap the whole thing. Repeat daily.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....
