he's dubiously been to the roger Clemens school of denying positives of drug tests...

I remember when they first started testing, I was working for Charlsie and we had several fillies that would tie up bad after just galloping. I would add baking soda to their feed to help them, it worked. But our vet came in one day and questioned us about it and said we needed to be careful, that they were going to be testing for it and (baking soda/milkshaking) and she could come up with a bad test. We were stunned. He said the fact that we didn't know if and how much the fillies had in their systems.

I was like " for crying out loud, now you can't do something so simple as give your horse a tablespoon of baking soda a day to stop it from tying up without worrying about a bad test? " My vet told us to wait and see what the limits were but we needed to figure out something else.

Holy cow, Winds! We did that in the barn, too - I remember when I first started, there was a filly named Farewell Letter that always tied up, and baking soda would be added to her feed, and it worked. I didn't know until later that I was working for a milkshaker. LOL!

bdw,

I'm not a chemist, but if you can bear with me and those that know better, I believe when given in the amounts and when by tubing it stops muscle fatigue because it stops latic acid from building in muscle mass.

I'm not really an expert because, I don't like drugs or anything that alters in anyway how a horse runs or how it's body works.

Winds, the man was pure genius with a horse. He thought up all kinds of nutty remedies that you'd laugh at, but they all worked. Once in a while, I'd actually mix one the right way. LOL!

Feet were never a really big problem in the barn, but I remember one horse named Muskoka Wyck. He had eggshell feet and he used to get those little cracks around the clinches (Mr Miller called them "Spider Cracks.") We used to soak his feet in eggs, and it strengthened them. Mr Miller said he got the idea when his wife once went to get her nails done and the beautician soaked her nails in a egg to strengthen them - he figured he'd give it a try, and it worked for him. LOL!

Today, he's forgotten more than most trainers know.

But, if he knew that baking soda would do anything like it does with milkshakes, he would have thrown the box away.
