Hey,
I'm just curious to know what kind of suspensions are handed out if a vet catches a horse bleeding through the nose after a race? I've heard that the length of suspension differs from country to country.
Here in South Africa it's 3 months for the first time and 6 months for the second time.
Thanks,
FF.

Question about Suspensions/Bleeding
"But i don't want to go among mad people." Said Alice.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the cat. "We're all mad here."

It's not really a "suspension" in California. The horse is put on the vet's list, and you are ineligible in the time period listed. Here's the rule:
(g) If the official veterinarian observes a horse bleeding externally from one or both nostrils during or after a race or workout, and determines such bleeding is a direct result of EIPH, the horse shall be ineligible to race for the following periods: · First incident-14 days; · Second incident within 365-day period-30 days; · Third incident within 365-day period-180 days; · Fourth incident within 365-day period-barred for racing lifetime.
You usually have to work the horse also to get off the vet's list, and sometimes they have a specified distance, like 5/8ths of a mile.

That's great, thanks so much for your replies, it's very interesting, since we don't have vet checks after work outs. Usually if a horse is suspected of bleeding but shows no external evidence (IE: bleeding through the nose) then sometimes a vet will be called in to scope, but there's no suspension for that.
Most times, trainers will just assume the horse is a bleeder and treat accordingly, we can't race on Lasix here, so we give Ammonium Chloride pre-race (4hours).
Any ideas on suspensions/whatever in the UK and Australia?
Thanks,
FF

Fort Falcon;
In our country bleeders do not show up as much as in other parts of the world.
As breeding with bleeders will be actively dis encouraged.
Genaral rule 1st time 14 days off 2nd time ban from racing.
Bleeding is just a hefty stress symptom.
It will prove by giving horses natural calmers, than the bleeding will not occur anymore.

Do bleeders bred bleeders? I have asked several vets this ? & they are divided on this ?
LOL, this is something that has cropped up in conversation from time to time....I'm not really sure what the vets opinions are on this...some seem to think that their may be a gene that can cause bleeding,
But interestingly enough I've also been told that by giving anti-inflammatories ALL the time (as happens frequently in racing) can also caus bleeding - something to do with weakening the capilliries - but I haven't put this to a vet yet, but will let you know the outcome.....
Personally I believe that inbreeding is a mjor case of bleeding too.
BenB thanks for your input - I also agree that stress is a big factor with bleeding and also heat!

The reason to the above is the next: The body is not allowed anymore to solve the problem by itself so it will destructed by anti inflammatories in time to go, not within a month but in time.
Mostly the anti inflammatories are giving before something occurs, so the body can not even react on it, if the problem should occurs
In germany forinstance stallions that got lasix are not allowed for stud duties
Not the heat in itself but the combination with moisture rate the people around and the distance as bleeding occurs more within sprinters than stayers

A great % of bleeding occurs in the states when sore horses full of drugs are struggling through an unsuitable track surface with a little guy on their backs beating them long after they have anything left to give on a hot and humid day. In most worldwide jurisdictions they have drug-free racing and if a horse does break a blood vessell than it is rested and allowed to heal. Over here they get a diuretic and give them even more drugs and carry on the circus. It's such a shame!!
