Naming Your Horses

Postby fort_falcon » Thu Mar 06, 2008 9:42 am

I'm not talking about favourite names....I believe that's already been covered :). What I would like to know is do you have a specific WAY of naming your horses...like some people try to name according to the pedigree, while others have a more specific way of naming, for example, one breeder here starts all his horses names with "Just" so you have : Just In Time, Just Beautiful, Just Once More, Just Who, Just A Horse, etc etc.

Another breeder we get our horses from names all her horses after song titles: Oopsididitagain, Drift Away, From Yesterday, Sister Blister, Cecilia, etc etc...

If I ever bred horses I'd name them all with "Heart" somewhere in their name:

Hearts Desire, Hearts Courage, Heart Of Gold, Hearts Blood, Hearts And Wings, Gypsy Heart, Wandering Heart, etc etc....
"But i don't want to go among mad people." Said Alice.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the cat. "We're all mad here."

Not in a position to name yet, but always thought it would be fun to raise horses and name them as parts of a sentence:

I Never Thought
Eyed
Be Able
Toget
Back in the Game

Since we are Trinity Ranch, and Christian people, we name our babies names that are "religious" in nature. For example, my 2007 crop:

Hollywood Archangel (pal. colt)
The King's Rain (pal. colt-born outside in a storm)
Mercy and Light (buck. filly)
Saving Grace (pal. filly)
Justice: When you get what you deserve.
Mercy: When you don't get what you deserve.
Grace: When you get what you don't deserve.

First priority for naming is a clever blend of sire and dam. If that doesnt work, I go for something to do with a favorite song, or artist, or even a single word that works. I had a horse that RNA'd at a sale, so I namd her Ahrenade. The JC needed an explanation before granting us the name!

I like the blending of sire and dam. I am old, stodgy, and prefer that when I see something like Honey Im Smart (totally made up) to be perhaps from Smart Strike/Honey Ryder, as opposed to coming from Blue Chicken Squawker and Colicky Colita. (though the names have been changed to protect their identities the crime is still the same!! lmao) I totally apologize if any of the above reflect any horse you know, I tried to really reach for crazy monikers!
trying to come up with something brillant..... this may take a while. :)

I've never really cared for the naming a horse with a blend of the parents names simply because most times they are bloody awful. They just sound bad. Plus, most show little to no creativity (witness all the Whitney horses). If you can harken back to a parent's name in a clever way, that's one thing -- but I'm getting really tired of all the (Something) Cat names for one. Black Minnaloushe was one of the few that I liked because you could guess it was a Storm Cat line without it being incredibly obvious.

I would like to name the foals according to the year they were born, my first year breeding foals will all start with A, my second year with B and so on. I also like to have it something to do with the parents names.

How about the one that was named "Dave named me" or whatever the name is of the guy who kept rejecting their names?

We had Oat Bread (by Oh Say), who was out of Bread and Butter who was out of Tea and Toast out of Cup of Tea out of Teahouse out of Geisha.

Owned a mare named Highclasstrouble - by Demon's Begone out of Tea at the Ritz by Riverman.

Had a horse named Salpapickyma (dont ask, I have no clue either) who was out of Ripe Tomato (Dead Ahead). He has a sibling listed here as "Picked Clean."

Trained one named Polly's Punch (Two Punch ex CC Polly) and her half brother Matt Muck (Leematt).

I name mine after rock n roll songs, or bands. Dancing Days (Led Zeppelin), Act Naturally (Beatles), Hawaii Blues (Commander Cody), Marrakech Express (Crosy Stills and Nash), Life Is A Carnival (The Band). Obviously OLD rock n roll

The famous breeder in the early 20th century, E.R. Bradley, always named his horses with the letter 'B', not because his name was Bradley but because his first horse was a fast runner named Bad News. Bradley was a gambler and superstitious about things like that. Some of his good ones included ... Black Toney, Black Helen, Blue Larkspur, Black Servant, Bimelech, Bloodroot, Busher, etc

Tesio used to give his horses names of Italian artists, and typically gave them names that had the same starting letter as the foundation dam of the family in his stud. I've thought about doing the same sort of thing but using the names of North American rivers and streams instead.
