This sale is very light on sire power and pedigree, but the good movers/individuals are selling well.

The sales results aren't up yet, but theres a lot of talk that the buy back rate was very high, and a lot of phoney money was around.

How about Bafferts $350,000 purchase from long time friend Murray Smith of a colt by an unraced sire (City Place) out of an unplaced dam from a weak family?

Glad you mentioned that Noor cause I was sitting there thinking I had the wrong page as the price climbed. It didn't make any sense to me. Alot went not sold. #53 was my #1 pic. She is a gorgeous filly.

That City Place colt is a very nice individual. I worked with him as a foal.

That said, I'm sad to see him go to Baffert.

191 catalogued
73 sold
avg down 18%
median down 25%
RNA=45%
Gross=down from $19.3 million to $13 million

Very few return buyers; I guess those who've been burned by this beauty pageant finally figured out its a waste of money.

The Barretts March sale has produced some pretty good runners, about 10% stakes winners and 4% GSW, both good marks.

Not sure why you would call it a beauty pageant. It's a training sale.

Training implies a regimen designed to ready a horse for a race. Two year old previews aren't anything near that. They are designed to ready a horse to perform at his lifetime best on a fixed date. Thus, these horses aren't being trained as racehorses anymore than a beautiful girl in a beauty pageant has been primped and primed for a long term career.

I've studied the success of Barretts grads over the years and can vouch that, other than a handful of stars, most of its graduates don't earn the sales tax on their purchase prices. The whole show is done for the benefit of neophyte owners who've been led to believe that a horse who can run the fastest 220 yards is the second coming of Secretariat. Mix in a whole lot of monkey games with the bidding and you have a recipe for killing off new owners.

Noor, I agree with you that many of these horses are being trained with the goal of running fast for 1-3 furlongs during the first half of their two-year-old year, and that is not a good thing.

But in the juvenile product's favor, there are a lot of really good horsemen selecting these two-year-old prospects on very strict physical criteria. Additionally, those horsemen know that if the market does not share their view of what a horse is worth, they will have to sell at a discount or race it themselves.

I've copied the Barretts March stats from 1997-2006, per Thoroughbred Times below. Barretts is not the best two-year-old sale, but it isn't as terrible as you suggest.

And despite the juvenile market's reputation for burning out horses, the overall numbers have consistently shown that two-year-old sales outperform the yearling sales in some areas while meeting the average for the breed in most others.

Barretts March 1997-2006

963 horses sold
Average price $176,306
Average earnings $113,208
Starters 873 (90.7 %)
Starts per horse 14.4
Winners 671 (69.7%)
Stakes Winners 101 (10.5%)
Graded stakes winners 44 (4.6%)
Average win distance 6.7 furlongs

Ill-bred, I don't think anyone believes that good horses can't be found in the 2yo in training sales. Obviously, many good horses have survived the rigors of sales training to win good races.

The question is how much potential was left on the track on preview day, and in the few months preceding it? In many cases these horses have surpassed existing world records of older horses, and approached the times of top quality Quarter Horses, in their previews. This simply cannot enhance their long-term soundness, and thus their income producing capacity.

I also strongly disagree that a comparison of the race records of the highly-selective 2yo's against those of the entire yearling population is reliable. In a sense, these 2yo sales contain the cream of the crop of the prior year yearling crop. As you say, the horsemen who have selected them have done so based on very strict standards with a specific goal in mind----fast preview times. Breeders have succumbed to producing conformational types whic will suit the pinhookers. Practically the entire Florida breeding industry is driven blind in their pursuit of Quarter Horse conformation and 1/4 mile speed.

CONCLUSIONS:

Without taking into account other factors--such as pedigree, buyer, trainer, and racetrack surface--we have concluded that while some of the fastest workouts were strong indicators of profit-making racehorses (e.g. OFFICER, BROTHER DEREK, QUEENIE BELLE, DUBAI ESCAPADE, HENNY HUGHES, RIVER'S PRAYER, and HABIBTI), the vast majority of these high potential Thoroughbreds proved failures as racehorses.

Moreover, we think this study proves that horses which perform at such a high rate of speed so early in their lives do not enjoy long careers. Time after time, we found horses who showed great talent in Barretts' previews which later started only two or three times in their lives.

Thus, we conclude that the horses which work fastest in Barretts' previews (and probably all other similar auctions) are likely to incur premature physical and/or mental problems which ultimately result in early retirements, diminished potentials, or breakdowns.

Noor: I agree with your above comments on those sales individuals. When I resesrched those preview Tb, I found they were bred from the Phalaris sire line with 9- 13 crosses of that sire line.

When a 1st time buyer purchases a Tb and it is unraced or starts only a few times, the buyer wont come backto the table.

The Tb of today are over medicated, inbred to the max, whch results in unsoundness. My friend trainer Carla Gains goes across the pond to buy her Tbs at the Tattersalls, Carla has picked out many sound superiior runners.
Those without sin cast the first stone.
