Racing at Laurel: 3/15/08

Postby Barbaro06 » Sat Mar 15, 2008 3:38 pm

The weather finally broke and I went up to Laurel to watch the races. Bet a little too but I quit after going for a trifecta box and watching my horses run all over the place save for 1st thru 3rd.

Two horses in separate races clipped heels and sent their riders into the dirt. The horses were OK for the most part (one gave the outrider a good run for her money) and the jocks were banged up a little. J.D. Acosta was limping a bit; Luis Garcia stayed on the ground for a minute or two before he got up. Both incidents happened after the wire and one the stewards took a look at with no change.

Two horses had nice skunk tails--one was a dark bay gelding by the name of Fire Chief Casey (by Hook and Ladder out of Fire Breath by Salt Lake)--I think he also had some flecks of white in his coat too. The other was a filly named Access Fee (by Menifee out of Denied Access by Cryptoclearance). Everybody was abuzz about the horses with white in their tails.

I met the owner of Carni's Last Stand and he was in love with his horse. I told him I liked his sire Carnivalay and he told me Carni looked a bit like his sire and grandsire, Northen Dancer. The little guy had some chrome on his legs and I can't recall his facial markings if he had any. Well the owner said people were talking his horse didn't have a chance...the little guy proved them wrong...he finished second by half a length and picked up almost 3K. His owner must have been walking on air after that!

And the winner for tackiness--they were selling a mixed drink called the "Car Bomb" as part of the Saint Paddy's Day celebration at the track. Hmmmm. Made me think IRA (and not the retirement account)...I wonder if anyone is going to complain. Hopefully we won't see "IED" on the drink list any time soon!

we watch the simulcast every weekend on televisions so bad we can't even tell the saddlecloth colors so missed the skunk tails. however, laurel had a nice card yesterday with full fields. justin nixon seems to be a near lock when he's entered and the team of rigliterri(sp?) and pannell didn't ship the new yorker in for nothing.

why in the world maryland doesn't approve the $.10 supers is beyond me. people love them, they bet them, and everyone else has gotten on board. but i suppose that would be the smart thing to do.

Yeah, there are some things they don't do that makes you scratch your head.
