The Mans not doing too well this year.

Overbrook has taken steps to aid Storm Cat. The breeding shed staff has been collecting dismount samples after Storm Cat breeds, centrifuging the sample, and adding extenders before re-infusing it into the mare.
“But Storm Cat is such a good breeder that there is not much dismount with which to work,” Waldman said.
I'm trying not to make wet-spot jokes.
This has been coming for awhile. Now, maybe all those moaners who screamed every time a mare was retired and announced as going to Storm Cat in the last 2 years will get it. He was getting OLD. He wasn't going to be around for ever. IF you were going to go, you had to go NOW.
Yep, he's up there in age. I just hope they don't use him until he keels over from breeding. Move him far away from the shed and let him live his last years in some quiet.
Retire him and move on to the next big stud.....

Wow. I didn't know they could do that--I would think somebody would have a hissy fit about the definition of 'live cover.'

I didn't know that either...and I too wondered about the AI thing - I went to The Jockey Club website and checked out the rulebook - Under Eligibility For Foal Registration, Letter D:
"As an aid to the Breeding, a portion of the ejaculate produced by the stallion during such mating may immediately be placed in the uterus of the broodmare being bred. "
I'm guessing that part of the rules is what allows them to do that without the resulting foal being ineligible for registration?

The thing I'm hung up on is the "immediately" part of that statement. Define 'immediately." By the statement in the article, they are "centrifuging the sample and adding extenders" -- um, that all takes some time. Granted, not a considerably long time, but it's at least an hour. Even if it's half an hour, that doesn't sound like "immediately" to me.
It's like the debates we had in when I was in college about exactly how long it took to "premeditate" a murder.
Smart Strike had an explosive run last year and he's been a consistently good stallion from the start, but I think we'll see his fee start to drop a little after Curlin makes his exit.
I think he's a very good stallion, but not exceptional. His best horses in his entire stud career all happened to be active at the same time. A lucky feat.
Hope he proves me wrong, but I don't see him breaking 200k ever in fee.
