I second the calcium!!!! find the best form you can and take it regularly!!!
I was shocked last year when I had an x ray done of my femur and the Dr's were concerned that I was showing signs of osteoporosis I am now 35. Scared me to take Calcium very regularly!!!
Be safe and enjoy the meds... the only good part of injury

Okay guys. I am home now and yes fortunately we have health insurance (we'll find out how good when the bills start coming in) and my sister, niece and daughter in law have volunteered to come and babysit me since my husband refuses to leave me alone. To quote him "you will be running the vacuum cleaner from the damn wheelchair left on your own" and "you will be taking the wheelchair to the barn" - which I will be doing that tommorrow since it is all concrete to the barn so that won't be a problem!

How did I come to this state of dispair? I was taking Honor to the breeding shed and there was a rut in the gravel driveway which my left foot stumbled on. I moved my right foot to help my balance and since I had the shank and pulled on it a tad Honor backed up since she couldn't go forward, meaning she stepped on my right foot. That caused me to completely lose my balance and I fell on my left hip. I was using a walker thinking I had just sprained my leg/groin and then Monday I slipped on the steps going out to the garage with my walker. Voila - immediate increase in pain!! I even said take me to the freaking ER NOW!!! I almost died when they had to bend my leg to get into the car but I AM WOMAN AND THEY DID HEAR ME ROAR - they got me in ;) Got there and it was broke. Next day I had to have surgery. Pain meds are great though - Oxycotin and Percocet. I'll never be able to wear my Daisy Dukes again however as the scar on my hip will just totally ruin the effect (HA). I think there are 20 staples in there - quite lovely.

If my helpers don't drive me nuts I may survive this - too much family can be a bad thing!!

Said I'd be good as new - and I have not had a cigarrette since Monday afternoon (I AM GOING CRAZY) but I have herbal ones (no not the good kind) but the ones that are tobacco and nicotine free. We'll see how it works. I'll give it a shot. Not a good time to try I guess but since I couldn't smoke in the hospital what the heck ;)

So guys, now you know my woes ;)

Madelyn, you'll just have to pull your pant leg up - I'll have to pull my pants down so we'll have to be careful where/when we compare scars (HA)

Swimming is great for rehab I'll mention it to my ortho doc!

LOL I do believe you'll vacuum from the chair!!!!
My best friend broke her pelvis in 3 places years ago. The dr's sent her home with crutches... I got her a wheel chair... The next day I walked in on her as she vacuumed from the chair... it was quite a sight to see... never an agrier vacuumer...
We also put a plastic lawnchair in the shower so she could sit and be clean...

Oooh clh, I'm so sorry. I did not realize that you admired Madelyn so much you felt moved to emulate her.

But if it hurts you just go ahead and roar as much as you like.

Seriously I hope your recovery is as pain free and straightforward as possible.

clh, we could get you a shirt that says "Tripped and Stomped at the Breeding Shed" with a matching cane... I could get one that says "Trampled by a Herd of Broodmares and Left For Dead." We'd make a PERFECT pair of gimps at the sales.

Now we REALLY can't visit each other. Okay, Skipitgirl, I'm ready for the night out when Cheryl is.

Madelyn, when you said you fell down the slope and got stepped on I thought you meant only one horse stepped on you. You mean the whole herd stomped on you?

After you got them dates with all the best looking sires and fed them all the good stuff and sacrificed your insurance premiums so they could get their regumate? What an ungrateful bunch. They should each contribute a day's hay to cover the T-shirt.

Hope the pain is receding for you Madelyn and for you as well clh. And Skipitgirl, you seemed to say you were feeling better and I hope you're finding a way to deal with that enormous financial hit. You too Madelyn with the money aspect.

I'm so sorry all these bad things have been happening to all of you. I am wondering about the bubble wrap idea, but my students might think I look funny. Ah, they probably think that anyway.

Clh you're lucky to have insurance, although I'm quite sure you want to hit anyone who suggests looking on the bright side.

Antime anyplace for a drink gals! Name the place and the time :) Walker and wheelchair will get me there just fine.

And if you don't laugh you'll cry right and if you start crying you'll never stop.

What did I miss on Skipitgirl - what happened? Geez I am out of the loop. Perhaps I can catch up now that I'm homebound - although do need to get my hair done, my nails done and somebody better get over her and shave my freaking legs soon or I will have to bend in a cortortion they said I couldn't bend to get it done (HA).

Oh well, just another story to add to our many trials and tribulations of the TB business (HA).

We can run our own "Run for the Roses" in our walkers, crutches and/or wheelchairs" - ha

I'm sure Skipitgirl can tell this better than I and I don't know where her thread started, but on Madelyn's thread where she detailed her accident and described issues relating to hospital billing, Skipitgirl related that she had been in hospital, contracted a staph infection and ended up with a bill of $164,000.

The herd ran over me. Only Sophie caught my leg. Then they all milled around as the round bale nearly rolled over me and I had to claw my way up and out of there on the double. My husband was on the tractor and didn't see anything. I tried to crawl to the house but my foot was dangling and that rather hurt. So I got it straightened so my boot could hold it, and then sort of scooted on my a$$ to the house. It kind of pisses me off, because he INSISTED on doing that right then, and in my opinion it was too late, too dark and too dangerous but he got that look and that tone going. Several times he has broached the subject to allow me to absolve him, but he will wait until hell freezes over for that.

Oh dear. Best wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery. Now, to the rest of you girls not already on the walking (well, sort of) wounded list: will you PLEASE be careful? There's no need to demonstrate just how tough we all are (as if childbirth wasn't enough of a demonstration) -- as they say in the Army, pain, hunger, and lack of sleep are things you do NOT need to practice in advance of necessity!

Of course, being the sort who can't walk and chew bubble gum at the same time, I'll probably be the one to trip on a crack in the sidewalk tomorrow and break a wrist or a kneecap without the assistance of a horse, thereby proving that I'm not very good at following my own advice.

Madelyn, OUCH, that must have been scary as well as painful.

Husband - hell freezes over? Maybe but given my vast and negative experience of husbands, there is something to be said for the fact that he was doing the task at all. There is also the possibility that he might listen to you in the future... then possibly as with many husbands that get us back to the hell freezes over part........

What a trip! We can always turn this into a bashing hubby thread ;) I woke up this morning - me with a broken hip in (almost) excrutiating pain, in need of medication and some diet pepsi cola and since our house is so spread out hubby so politely asked me last night to call him on his freaking cell phone so I didn't have to yell (meaning so he didn't have to keep getting off his large arse to check on me) so I get up on the walker (in my excrutiating pain - did I mention that?) and hobble to the kitchen and holler ever so nicely for my beloved. No answer. So I hobble back to the bedroom without my ice cold pepsi cola and pain medication (in excrutiating pain) and call him - HE'S AT THE FREAKING GROCERY STORE BUYING HEAVEN KNOWS WHAT - BUT HE LEAVES THE FREAKING HOUSE WIHTOUT TELLING ME HE'S LEAVING!!!! Me without my caffiene, pain medication or nicotine very politely said no, I didn't require anything from the grocery store. The day went downhill from there. You don't even want to know about shower time and/or when the nurse came to change the bandage and he had to watch - oh my goodness is this going to be a long, long, long, four to six weeks. Perhaps I should start drinking

I've been sleeping on the sofa a LOT because the cast is SO uncomfortable I wake up a lot. Husband tends to snore, and also can take a lot of bed up.. anyhow, I can't count the number of times he moved the wheelchair AND the walker out of his way so HE could see the tv better, and then did NOT move either one within reach of ME, after I had fallen asleep. And left. The room, the house, etc. etc. One night he was doing something requiring beer drinking outside and came in at three in the F---ing morning and asked if he could turn on the tv. Woke me up. I know, you're probably saying "at least he asked!" For the first week when I was not mobile, I literally starved. Lost six pounds.. well maybe he was trying to tell me something?

Men are not nurturers. Actually my son is MUCH BETTER, jumps when I need something, keeps my orange bowl going (I eat tons of navel oranges). He's been helping me cook and vacuum. But he's in school all day during the week.

Yipes! Your hubby's a nice guy, but obviously he has his blind spots. Just how have you avoided murdering him this last week -- solely because of his being out of reach at the time of his worst offenses?
