ideal crosses on this mare

Postby lotsahorsin » Tue Jun 10, 2008 4:36 am

I have just acquired this mare-I am looking for ideal crosses for her for 2009.

I've just been out of breeding TBs long enough to not quite be sure what she would cross nicely with.
She has the typical Olden Times shoulder, a nice short back and a decent hip. Nice refinement to her-just enough to keep her looking like a mare.

Danzig would be my first choice followed by Storm Cat

Take a look at INGOT. He's by Seeking the Gold and out of a G-1 Storm cat dam with $864k in winnings and a race record of 20/9/5/4.

Best of all he's in Ontario at Avila acres

I'd worry about fertility problems with these two choices. Storm Cat is pensioned and Danzig is, well, dead.

She is tale female to Frizette which makes me want to think about a Mr Prospector or Seattle Slew line stallion. In addition, she also carries Missy Baba thru Sauce Boat. Based on this, I would look at an AP Indy line stallion or someting like Lemon Drop Kid or Uncle Abbie. Another stallion I like a lot with lots of Frizette would be Seattle Fitz.

Raj Waki might be nice with her. He produces sound runners 83% winners to runner average earnings per runner of $120,600. 6% SW 28% blacktype to runners and 24 starts per runner. He has been seriously underpatronized and overlooked and he could go very nicely with your mare. He is at Gardiner Farms in Ontario and his stud fee is only $1,000. Canadian. That is probably the biggest bargain in Canada. He has average earnings comparable to Storm Cat. Raj Waki is by Miswaki a son of Mr. Prospector and his dam is by Silent Screen a son of Prince John.

I also like Ingot a bit for this mare. Maybe a bit more, Weather Warning. Also Saffir or Shelter.

Sauce Boat as a BM sire has thrown 8 GSW's, two with Storm Cat or a son.

Thinking a little outside the box, and a favorite of mine in your neck of the woods is Legal Jousting.

Thanks for the input-I had thought putting her to a Mr. Prospector would be ideal but thought I should check.
I like the pedigree of Raj Waki-just a matter of seeing if conformationally he will complement her or not-and yes it would be a deal.

Suggest you compare the tail-female lines of Raj Waki and Ingot before making your choice.

my openion is that a breeding stallion's dam is about twice as important as his sire.

Ingot had a measley 9 starts 2 wins is by Seeking The Gold average starts per runner 12 dam by Storm Cat average starts 11. Ingot never won or placed in a stakes race. He just entered stud and is unproven. His dam(Catinca) has no other winners. She was offered at Keeneland Nov. 2007 and then outed see Hip #386.Raj Waki is a stakes winner who raced in England and has proven himself to be a good sire of sound runners and he sired TOO LATE NOW CH. 3 year old filly in Canada. Raj Waki's dam produced another Stakes winner named Agitated Lady. I am sure he is doing a great job of "improving his mares".
