White(?) thoroughbred in American Stud Book 1

Postby aethervox » Tue Jul 22, 2008 9:24 pm

Here are couple of early TB's who are listed as white:

Nonpareil (Gill's), wh. h., foaled --; bred, and in 1763 owned by John M. Gill. By imported Juniper (bay). 1st dam by imported Dabster (ch). 2d dam by imported Bulle Rock (bay).

Nabob (Rume's), w. h., foaled --, bred and owned in 1786 by James Hume, of Virginia. By imported Juniper (bay); 1st Dam by imported Silvereye (chestnut); 2nd dam by imported Monkey (unsure what color Monkey was); 3rd dam by imported Dabster (ch).

Since both Silvereye and Dabster were described as 'pale sorrel' and had "glass eyes" and a lot of white (face and all four feet), I suspect Nonpareil and Nabob were both maximally expressed sabinos if they didn't have grey parents (I don't know their dam's colors, unfortunately).

Aethervox,

Quite interesting!

Thank you so much for this valuable watch.
Up to now, the only reknown early white Thoroughbred was White Cross,
a colt foaled in Tennessee in 1896. The data, which I entered, can be seen here. The next case was a 1914 white (colt or filly) foaled in England, bred by Lord Middleton. Unfortunately, the foal was never registered and only speculation can assist us. Another white filly was produced in Ireland in 1959 named Rachel Vi. They all appear in my site.

Would really like to find more information on these 3 cases.

Lets see if more information emerges on this two new cases you are identifying. One problem that arises with trying to identify yesteryears white cases is that, back then, older grays were often referred to as "whites" because they were graying-out. Even today, some people in horse selling sites often refer to old grays as "whites".

In synthesis, lets see what else appears.

All the Best,

Thanks again.

Glass eyes would say BLUE eyes and maximum expressed Sabinos have dark eyes so they could have been Cremello or Perlino maybe.

I wasn't saying that either white horse had glass eyes, I was saying that they had horses with glass eyes and a lot of white markings in their pedigrees, indicating that those horses might be sabino.

DABSTER,
Imported about the year 1741; "we have heard he was a pale sorrel horse, with glass eyes, a large blaze face and all feet and legs white, with a flaxen mane and tail." He got in the general a very good stock of horses — Got by Hobgoblin — Spanker — Hautboy.

See http://books.google.com/books?id=02UCAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA28

SILVER EYE,
Was a pale sorrel horse, with a white face, raw nose, and glass eyes, very well formed, but light ; with all four legs white, above the knees before, and hocks behind. N. B. The above description of Silver Eye, was given to us by a very old gentleman, of high standing and respectability, who was very well acquainted with him, and saw him in the year 1762 or 1763. He was imported by Mr. S. Duval — Got by the Cullen Arabian — Curwen's Bay Barb — Byerly Turk — Curwen's Spot — White-Legged Chesnut Lowther Barb, out of the Old Vintner Mare, the very best mare of her day.

As suspected the whites and pintos were there all along, they weren't even hidden over here! And a STRIPED one. I sure wish there was a drawing of that one.

It's quite interesting to acknowledge the aforementioned list of so called "white" Thoroughbreds. The only problem is that we cannot assure
whether those "whites" equines actually were graying-out grays rather than genuine (Sa/Sa) sabino whites or any other reknown white version. This especially since there is not much evidence on their year of birth, along with their origin or parents. Most probably, these were aging grays.
Hope to be wrong. As per the rest of the other non "white" equines, hmmm, auspiciously interesting!
All the Best,

Jorge,

Did you see Mulatto-Mary (page 351)?

MULATTO-MARY, C.A.R.M.

This celebrated race mare was sold by William M. West, Esq. of New Hope Race Course, Halifax County, North Carolina, to Mr. Thomas J. Goodman, of Baltimore, Maryland, in May, 1827 — then 4 years of age. Mr. West gave her the above name from her being of a dun or yellow bay colour — Got by the C.A.R.H. Old Sir Archie (son of the I.H. Old Diomed) — Orion (son of I.H. Hoomes's Stirling) — Driver.

Signed, B. B. HUNTER.

The above was taken from the books of the Union Race Course, Kings County, New- York, near the city of New-York, in July, 1833.
