Other creatures love just like we do and anyone who says different is a liar. The Bible says he who loveth not knoweth not God. I could "prove" that horses are smarter than pigs by finding some very smart horses and some very stupid pigs. Some scientists have landed themselves in trouble for their unscientific behavior and even wrote fictional reports. I have seen a lot of pigs at different places and never saw one exhibit any behavior I would call especially intellgent but some most likely are. Anybody who claims that 90% of horses are worthless is a liar. I know that lots of good sound horses have been sent to slaughter and years ago saw good horses sold to a kill buyer. I saved one from the slaughterhouse. He was 5 years old, healthy and sound and I also bid against a kill buyer on one of the mares I bought.

This is the third time I've had to post this in the past few days... reminder of forum rule #3:

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal attacks, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

I'm getting tired of posting the same rule over and over again. I would hate to just start locking down threads.

Please remember that it is possible to argue your point of view without all the name-calling and insults.

The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Breeders of America are AGAINST horse slaughter. This is the official position for our breed and this is a Thoroughbred message board.

Strictly to answer the question above:

Horses are generally not bred to be eaten. They are bred for performance, work, sport, etc.

Cows and pigs that are bred for purposes other than for food, generally have a much better ending than those bred strictly for food. There are plenty of Vegans who also represent the position that animals should not even be killed for food.

I'm truly amazed an intelligent person such as yourself would even ask such ask such a question.

unnown to me northstar why you'd distinguish between animals. is there some moral basis? is it all right with you that factory farms keep pigs in little containers? how do you square "special status" for the horse with euthenasia stations, etc.

what I believe is happening per the original article that started this thread and the one comprehensive post on it by Gallop 58, is a recognition of the function of the slaughter plant vis a vis people that own horses.

the sad fact is that a very large percentage of horses receive substandard care that with untold numbers approaches abuse and neglect. this happens as animals lose the use for which they were bred.

Slaughter plants give the neglecting owner an outlet to end the suffering of their animals.

"St-Exupery:tu es responsable de ce que tu apprivoises" in english goes something like this:you are responsible for what you domesticate...in my opinion every single person is responsible for every single animal that as human being we domesticate and i try to live by that.it is not easy but i honestly believe that if each of us would live by that the problem would be inexistent."charite bien ordonnee commence par soi-meme"translate something like this:well organize charity starts with me.so, no point in talking about what others(individuals.corporations or governments)should do... lets just start by taking individually our responsibilities and if we all do it.. one by one.. there wont be anymore problem to talk of.As of myself i am responsible for what i create(as a breeder)what i domesticate(as a trainer)what i buy or acquire(as an owner)and i see to it PERSONALY.If i can't take that responsibility i don't breed.buy or train...and by the way,i know that is why i am not rich but when i face myself in the mirror i can look myself in the eyes...that is being rich for me...

i agree with your points personally. eloquently stated btw!!! what's being discussed is those that fail to live up to this ideal and fail to care for their animals. these sorts we'd hope for the animals sake would send it to slaughter and end the suffering. the plants as they existed provided the better alternative for the animal from the neglecting owner.

I dunno Rather....... given the 2 options, I can't tell you which one is better than the other. But both involve people not being responsible for what they had a hand in creating.
trying to come up with something brillant..... this may take a while. :)

Slaughter plants and transportation to slaughter cause additional suffering to horses. Hog barns with close confinement are cruel and transportation to slaughter of pigs is many times cruel. Pigs, etc are sometimes subjected to extreme heat or extreme cold on the way to slaughterhouses. Sometimes pigs become frozen to the sides of trailers or suffer from heat prostration. Same thing can happen to cows or horses or chickens, etc. Transport regulations supposedly allow people to transport animals without food water heat or cooling for 28 hours. They can suffer a lot and even die during that time. Offering neglectful owners an easy out with a profit when they deserve to suffer is an option they do not deserve. They should have to either pay for humane euthanasia themselves or turn their horses over to animal control or a horse rescue just like they would a dog or cat. Cruelty charges should be brought against those who are cruel to any animal whether it was raised for food or not. There are people trying to get the standard changed to allow animals to be in transit for 8 hours or less. Slaughterhouses have been guilty of cruelty to horses, cows, pigs, etc. Those that are guilty deserve to suffer just like the ones convicted in CA at a cattle slaughterhouse. Horses work for people and some people are grateful for what they do. New York City police horses when they can no longer work get to retire to green pastures they do not have the misfortune of being crammed into trailers on a long cruel journey to a cruel painful death. Many Thoroughbreds have had illustrious second careers like the 2 off the track Thoroughbreds that helped the US win Olympic Gold. There are many purebred registered off the track Thoroughbreds doing all kinds of jobs even police work. There are people who believe that after serving people and doing whatever work is asked of them they should be pensioned just like any other employee. Dogs who work for people get pensioned also. Cows in this country do no work and people bring them food and give them pastures to roam in and properly raised pigs get to enjoy life with people working for them. They do not deserve any cruelty but they usually end up giving their lives to those who served them just like the people in The Time Machine. They had a pleasant life and then were called in to a building and some were chosen for slaughter and eaten. There was another movie where aliens from another world took over the earth and made sure everyone was well fed and happy. They took people on board their spaceships to "visit" their world but the people never came back because the aliens ate them. Too many animals these days are not raised in a happy carefree environment. They have miserable unhappy lives on factory "farms" where they are constantly confined and sometimes abused. I stopped eating meat because of cruelty in raising transporting and slaughtering. Animals have souls according to many Christians and non Christians and they deserve to be well treated. A good man careth for the life of his beast.

spex, for the neglected horse, how really does that factor into the equation? seems to me the issues boil down:

1. do we agree that large number of horses receive substandard care.
2. if 1 is true, is it better for the horse to continue in it's situation or be humanely destroyed.

add to this, that if 2 is "humane destruction" then the slaughter plants allowed the abuser the alternative. presume that people are irresponsible to horses for various reasons, money, brain problems, drunkeness, cruelty, and also the fairly relevant thing that horse endeavors simply would fail to exist without some means of humane disposal. what e.g. are you going to do with ur ten when you no longer want them--not personal, just a e.g.

"Humane disposal" is what happens to dogs and cats at some shelters. Horse slaughter is not humane. Humane is an overdose of sodium pentobarbitol or a well placed bullet. There are many veterinarians against horse slaughter beause it is cruel. The humane slaughter act says that an animal must be rendered unconscious with one blow. That is not what happens a lot of the time. Did you see the HBO show about what happens to innocent horses who did what people wanted and instead of being rewarded were sent off to be cruelly killed. There was one mare hit a dozen times before she dropped. A lot of the horses that have gone to slaughter have been stolen from people who cared about them either by sneak thieves or crooks who claimed they would provide a good home and instead took them to a slaughter auction or to the slaughterhouse(theft by deception). The great majority of horses are not neglected anymore than the majority of dogs are.

is that your opinion or do you have something to back that up. have you walked through the average show barn lately, or, perhaps a tenessee walking horse barn, if you wanna puke. replace "great" with "bare" and you might be close to the truth.

Maybe your version of neglected is not the same as mine. Some Tennessee Walking horses have been abused by people who sore them instead of training them properly. That is cruelty not neglect. Neglect is failing to provide for their needs. Lack of or not enough food, water, and shelter is neglect. Show horses are usually not neglected. Dogs have been neglected also and so have human children. Would you like to see human children cruelly slaughtered that are being neglected? I would like to see them rescued and the dogs and horses also.
