One of the topics today (Monday 8/25) on TVG around the noon hour was the fact that some mares actually raced in foal in the 1950's and 60's. One of the mares mentioned was SAVAII. This gal definitely had a nice record on the track. http://www.pedigreequery.com/savaii
I was wondering if this has occurred recently to anyone's knowledge? Are there any track regulations that would prohibit it?

They race mares in foal on a regular basis in Europe. The RacingPost had a series of articles in June about racing mares in foal, and it's ability to enhance performance.
I believe that the rules state that they can't race them past a certain point of gestation, perhaps someone could confirm this?

Last year, two turf mares, Sabellina and Iron Goddess, ran in New York while pregnant. In fact, Iron Goddess won the Stage View Stakes with Channing Hill up, in the second fastest 7f (turf or dirt) time in 2 years at Belmont (and paying $53.50 to boot!). Sabellina finished fourth.
Iron Goddess next finished third in the Dinner Diamond Stakes on July 27, and then her connections, feeling really ambitious, tested her against Wait a While and My Typhoon in the G2 Ballston Spa Handicap (she finished last).
After the Stage View, Sabellina finished sixth in the Dinner Diamond and then took on the boys in the Naskra’s Breeze Stakes, coming in third.
Then 4-year-old Iron Goddess was in foal to El Corredor, while 6-year-old Sabellina sold at Keeneland’s November Breeding Stock sale (Hip #260) for $550,000 in foal to Pulpit. Would love to hear how their pregnancies fared.

Can you remember the stated theory behind this? Or perhaps remember an online site to read on the subject?
Besides not having to worry about a mare's cycling (the obvious, and time limited, one), I don't quite understand the rationale behind the enhance effect?

If you go to the Racing Posts website you can search for the article in their online cuttings library. (I used the query 'in foal', the articles in question are on about the fourth page of results).
"However, over time, I became increasingly satisfied, albeit by anecdotal not scientific evidence, that mares in foal were producing superior performances. That so, it became overwhelmingly obvious to me that the argument for publishing the information for punters was weighing heavier than the argument for not doing so, especially as the animal protectionists should also be satisfied by the support of vets for mares running in foal for 120 days.

Thanks, but..
Half of that went right over my head! I'm new here, ifyoucan'ttell
so would you have a link to that board and I'll search from there? I really appreciate it.
N'mind on that part. I THINK I've found it, but when I try to search I get this:
