The Profit Protection program is a modified pay from proceeds. There will be a limited number offered for Sun King and Nobiz Like Shobiz - with a preference for good racemares or race producers and/or those foaling in regional markets.

In a nutshell - no up front stud fee, when the horse sells (either as a weanling or yearling) the breeder receives the first $5K of proceeds. The proceeds are then split 50/50 up to $25,000. Over that $25K, breeder keeps the rest.

So - if the horse brings $10K, breeder gets $7,500 - DD gets $2,500. If the horse brings $50K, breeder gets $40K, DD gets $10K. If the horse brings $5k or less - breeder gets it all - no stud fee is due.

Unlike a foal share, there is a cap on how much DD gets and breeder's awards are not split - breeder keeps them all.

I see this mare doing best in a regional market as well. If you're in Tennessee, Louisiana is right around the corner. There are some good stallions coming in there, and with breeders awards and higher purses you're more likely to do well money-wise. In addition, there is a useful market for Louisiana-breds in Texas.

As for a stallion in Louisiana, look at Wagon Limit. He sires a good, useful foal that will win $60k on average (excluding Silver Wagon) and stands for $2500. He hasn't seen too many mares with Mr P, but of the ones I found in the DB, there were 2 winners carrying Cryptoclearance, a SW carrying Jade Hunter, a SP horse with Afleet, etc. That doesn't mean it's a hit or a nick, but does imply that it won't be a raging failure (e.g. trying to linebreed to Intentionally via Holy Bull).

If you are looking at a regional market, you may want to consider Special Rate in Texas. In addition to it being a good cross MO they both tail female to Miss Carmie as well. Very good Stallion Stakes program in Texas as well.

Before you call the van man to send the mare off to Louisiana consider that the mare must be domiciled there and then bred back to a LA stallion. Even with reduced board bills as compared to KY this is going to amount to a good chunk of money. Add that to the fact that the breed back rule will cause you to have a loser (profit wise) when you try to sell the LA sired yearling. The profitable LA breds that sell well in Texas are for the most part by KY stallions. Some aren't but most are.

New Mexico has just a tight restriction on their state bred program.

Ontario used to be a good place but now you have to keep the mare there 150 days (150 x $25) and you are at $3750 before spending anything on vanning to get there, vet bills, etc. A foaling mare will add another $500 for a foaling fee to this figure.

You can get an Oklahoma bred by just foaling the mare out there, no breed back rule. I believe the mare has to be in the state by the end of the previous year. The tb yearling sale there had a 44% buy-back rate so it better be a good looking sucker.

ok folks, what about other regional programs like Iowa, Indiana, etc. any of them worth sending an out of state mare to these?

I live in MO, which has no state-bred program. I have a 2008 filly, who is MI-sired (eligible for MI Sire Stakes) and IN bred. My 2009 foal will be IN bred and sired.

For out of staters, IN bred program is not bad. I think the easiest way is this: Mare has to foal there (I hauled in about 30 days prior) and be bred back to IN stallion. My mare was there for a little over 2 months.
