I think the odds are completely against you. I would sell this mare. Maintenance costs are too high for the expectations to obtain a decent foal.

This is a man trying to do with what he has,not everybody has the funds to do it what's considered right the first time. You start where you can and move up from there.

This mare has a modest sire and a tremendous female family.

First off the sire,Marsayas - a blue blood son of Damascus that never was.Modest on the track but out of a daughter of Round Table that produced 4 SW's and 1 SP.He got shipped off to Puerto Rico yet from very few foals sired the likes of Mister Frisky(Champion Two Year Old and Horse Of The Year at two in Puerto Rico then he came to the states to win The Santa Anita Derby and ran 3rd in The Preakness---he in turn sired the Grade 2 Suburban Winner Frisk Me Now);Marsayas also sired Rod And Staff(a SW of $600,000 plus); For a well bred son of Damascus that had no race record and stood in Puerto Rico he did quite well with very modest mares to choose from.

As far as the dam's side there is a lot to work with there and most anyone that can read a pedigree beyond the first dam would love to have the 2nd dam back in any and all mares they may have.

With that said, let's get back to the mare.Modest sire, nice female family. The mare herself did not show much ability on the track as evidenced by a top speed rating of 77 and winning 2 races going a route. If her race record does not say "I NEED TO BE CROSSED ON SPEED" I don't know what else can say it especially with her 59 speed index sprinting.

So let's breed her to Sterling Key by Key To The Mint(A horse that had 1 win in 18 starts in 3 years of racing);Buckhar by Dahar(A route turf horse);Tinners Way by Secretariat(another route horse) for her 1st 3 foals.

In Pennsylvania I would look at:

Partner's Hero and Siphon hands down;No doubt Partner Hero's fee will probably go up off the year he's having but both these horse were sprinters.Your breeding to race anyways so why not breed to the 2 top stallions in the state in 2008 ?

Sincerely Jeff

I have to disagree with you on Marsayas. Due to the outstanding success of Mister Frisky, Marsayas was moved to Puerto Rico to stand at Haras del Caribe, a medium size operation with more than average quality broodmares. Actually, a large fraction of broodmares standing there were black-typed winners. Even with this, Marasayas was a complete failure. Most of the foals he sired were being raced at low-claiming races in Puerto Rico. I think he brought the mares down significantly.

Billl, Have you always been this much of an A%S? You would probably just take her out back and put a bullet in her .

I don't get why someone who is giving you a honest and factual account of your mare's sire is being an ass?

If you want someone who's going to blow smoke up yours, then by all means.

But you're going to learn soon enough you can lose your a$$ in this business and you'll want all the candor you can get.

Hotrod, I am providing you an opinion based on facts and clear observations. I will quit from this discussion, but keep something in your mind: This is not the best business to learn things by doing, you should document yourserlf, ask for expertise, and be more critical than your advisor in what your have. Now or later, you will learn the lessons.

A very cheap way.

DR. LITIN

Its broadmare sire is CARO, the sire of the most outstanding guy of the family of your mare.
Its sire and dam (Broad Brush and Winning Colors) need no presentation.
Maybe he is likely to produce some real runners, and maybe your mare is too.

Hotrod, I understand you are looking for advice on this board and please take the following into account when you consider what folks are telling you. I have not even looked at your mare's pedigree so I am not passing judgement on your mare at all. I only want to let you know my experience when I asked similar questions (years ago).

When I was looking for advice of a Coastal mare that was 1/2 sister to three graded stakes horses there were some that suggested a 2500 stud fee..after i had stated that I was looking for a breed to sale deal. And the other mare I asked about that is a full sister to a G3 stakes horse and 1/2 sister to two G1 stakes horses was the same deal, suggestions of a $5k stud fee. The mare's 1/2 sister has subsequently produced a G1 stakes horse.
