Old Racing Silks

Postby The Poacher » Fri Nov 21, 2008 5:01 pm

I have a set of racing silks with the initials G.B. embroidered on the cap. Inside the cap is the name George Brown. Can anyone tell me anything about the jockey?

Silks are associated with an owner and not a jockey.

George Brown is a common enough name that their have probably been several owners through the years named George Brown.

Off the top of my head I don't know of any prominent horses raced by an owner named George Brown.

I found this from 1903 online.

The complete story is in pdf format. Amazing the the NY Times archived these old, old articles . . . . . . but I am very impressed!!!

His name is George C. Brown and owned Spring Hill Farm that bred trotters. Could this be your George Brown?

The older editions (1945 and earlier) of the American Racing Manual have lists of all the owners' colors registered with the Jockey Club.

The 1945 volume lists a George Brown, Jr.: "Cherry and gold, cherry sleeves and cap".

Going back further, the 1940 edition lists the same George Brown as above, plus his wife ("Purple, red & yellow striped sleeves, yellow cap"). There is also a G. J. Brown ("Blue, red cross sashes, white cap"), and a G. W. Brown ("Cerise, yellow sleeves and cap").

Any of those a match? :)
