2 full brothers to What A Song

Postby Heidilady » Thu Nov 27, 2008 7:52 pm

2007 and 2008 colts by Songandaprayer out of What a Knight are out and about. I found this based on a search to remember the name of a horse (ultimately What a Song) that had a name I knew I'd liked. The Bloodhorse blog on horse names got me to thinking about it and in an effort to find out if they'd bred her back to Songandaprayer I went to the Breeders' Cup nomination verification. Was what happened to WAS something that would've kept you from using Songandaprayer or would you've done what they did with Eight Belles' dam and sent the mare back as if all'd gone according to plan and you were looking for further success?

I recall thinking that he would not last long after seeing a pic of him winning with a run-out scoop blinker looking uncomfortable. How long do they survive at Baffert's anyway? He may have still been around if he was given some time, unfortunately he was a victim of his own talent, speed is what you desire but too much speed is often deadly on a fragile frame. Catastrophic injuries the like of which he suffered are merely the end result of a multiple array of problems left unaddressed. You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows. It's too bad!

He broke down galloping at Del Mar, yes?

I posted What a Song's complete workout history and will disagree with the conclusion that he was fragile. Based upon his entire developmental and racing history, he was hickory IMO. A horse who started racing development as a fall yearling; who worked brilliantly as an early 2yold in training sale horse-then moved to the Baffert barn with no break in training and layed down bullet after bullet after bullet while winning three races was one tough physical specimen.

In Bruce Headley's hands this horse would have, likely, been a multiple sprint champion..

Here's his workouts that do not include his 2yold in training works below:

Works for WHAT A SONG, 2003:

In Bruce's barn he likely would have been a late colt also with a series of very rapid drills. And not making a first start until late 3 y o or 4 year old season though races sporadically till 7 or 8. Not that ther's anything wrong with that

And when you do, that will make you a complete fool.

Pedigree alone makes absolutely certain that What A Song would be on egg shells throughout his predictably brief career. Ditto any full siblings (obviously).

Furthermore, in Bruce Headley's hands, What A Song's career earnings would have been zero.

There remain only four trainers in North American Racing with more career earnings than Bob Baffert. Headley, by contrast, is merely a whining fool given his recent antics with Hollywood Park. (imagine, he wouldn't start any horses he "owned" there. A real man would have insisted he wouldn't start any at all. Now of course when you can't make the top three it doesn't matter whether you start 6 or 60. Headley is merely a whiner and now everyone knows it)

Only a very tough sound horse with an incredible immune system could have stood the pressure What A Song endured from his 2yold in training prep as a yearling to his death. He was hammered on unmercifully. You couldn't find three two year olds in a decade who could match the training pressure he endured.

Sandwich in a June 18, 05 maiden win, a 7-16-05 Hollywood Juvenile Championship victory (3/4s in 1:09.4/5) and an 8-14-05 Best Pal win (6.5 in 1:15.3) between numerous bullet works and only a fool would argue his pedigree broke him down....

Regarding Headley-not interested in any "whining" opinions. His eye for a racehorse; his stock's racing longevity and record speak for itself.
