Please be brutally honest about my fantasy stable stats

Postby Toccet02 » Wed Dec 31, 2008 9:15 am

OK. 2YOS of 2008 have wrapped up their racing season.
Tracking them has been a lot of fun and educational.

Here are my stats: Out of 53 horses in my stable (all 2YOS)

42 to work out, 28 to race, 6 winners, 1 G3 winner, 1 G1 placed starter, 1 ungraded stakes winner, one multiple ungraded stakes-placed as of December 31, 2008

Total Race record:

98 starts 9 wins 18 place 11 show $474,170 total purses
ITM%>> 38.78%
AEPS>> $4,838.47 (average earning per start)

My stats were much better until November, when the stakes horses went on vacation I guess, and the claimers shivered through December losses!

Thanks guys. Appreciate any comments. Oh, and I made back 9.5% of my investment...the winnings compared to total "paid" at Auction.
$93,764 was average price per horse (mostly Keeneland yearling sale).

Thanks for posting this, it reminded me to do the year-end stats for my fantasy stable. And I agree, it certainly has been fun and educational!

On your stable, if you are anything like me, my picks usually do better as 3 year olds, so don't worry too much about your horse's 2 year old performance. For return on investment, I also include the training/racing cost ($42,000 per year at the big tracks) and the trainer/jockey/groom fees (total 21% of the purse won) in addition to the purchase price of the horse. That is going to reduce your return on investment, but then you see why most owners don't make money racing. One thing you might want to do to prepare for next year is go back and review why you picked all your horses, taking into account which ones turned out to be good. See if you can pick more good ones next year!

OK here are my 2YOS of 2008:

7 horses, 7 to work out, 4 to race, 2 winners, 1 ungraded stakes winner.
16 starts, 4 wins, 2 place, 6 show $217,687 total purses
ITM% = 75%
AEPS = $13,605
return on investment = not much
average purchase price per horse = $114,286

21% winners from starters, one stakes winner and $474,000 earnings I think is outstanding from a performance standpoint but when you factor the cost of the horses, the training expense it points out how extremely difficult it is to break even in this game..

Thanks guys and happy birthday to all of our horses!. It's going to be hard to break the habit of looking for 2YO in race programs . . .

Turn To, thanks for the basic expenses guidelines...depressing but valuable to know!

Some of my purchases were emotional (My Dear Toccet), but most were looking for off the beaten path bloodlines that have soundness and brilliance at the track in their offspring. Jardin, linebred to Old Bess, for example--funky! And she was my stakes winner.

And, I gotta point out that my 2YOS with the most starts; 8, 8, and 6, were ALL Toccets.
Interesting and fun game.
Amazing ITM% Turn To! Congrats!

That's really interesting about Jardin and Old Bess. My best 2YO of 2008 was also a filly, Ten Churros, and she is inbred to the mare Rose Bower. It seems like horses who are inbred to good mares are often good themselves. It is certainly something I like to see in a pedigree.

it's just one of my own devising. Not an official game. I pretend to "buy" yearlings at Keesep and then track and see how they do.
