First...I wish you all a GREAT 2009!!!
I would guess this subject would be considered "Research" and have posted it there. And for those of you here in the "General" section, you just might have some informations to pass on.
Am looking for names and locations of early horse importers...late 1800's thru 1940's.
There of course was Carl Hagenbach, importer of horses (general use for circus', menagerie's, zoo's, etc.) as well a exotic wild animals; Holbert, Greeley, Lang, Cronin, etc. Some imported Draft/Coach horses, others "registered horses", which I would presume Thoroughbreds for racing/breeding, etc.
I would presume that the early years would be to the east coast, then shipped by land. In the 1900's and thereafter, some would come to the west coast.
Any information will be greatly appreciated! Thanx, Pat

The importer of Glencoe is one who made a tremendous impact on our US TBs. This is an excellent research site:

Also, the Painter Edward Troye painted many of America's finest early TBs. Trace their pedigree, and you will likely find the name of the importer.

Hi Pat, the stud books would be the first place to start. For TBs, as you probably know the imports are listed separately in most vols. of the ASB. In vol. 3 D.D. Withers' name figures prominently as an importer, as well as Lorillard, Belmont, et al., and a couple of P.T. Barnum's are in there too. For non-TB's I'd start with Battell's Registers, and Wallace's. For the time period of interest there are 3 vols. of the ASB (3,5,7) available online thru Google Books, as is Wallace's Trotting Reg.
