Lost our first foal

Postby clh » Fri Jan 16, 2009 12:21 pm

McCaskill lost her foal last Friday - stillborn. Had a hard time getting it out and the vet said if it hadn't been stillborn he would have had to put it down anyhow based on the contractures in her legs. The little Purim filly had no white on her at all - a dark brown. What to do with a filly when the ground is frozen? No render-man is coming. Called a pet cemetary and since she was the size of a large dog they cremated her for me. Went and picked her up the next day. They wanted to know what her name was when I took her there - duh - hadn't named her yet since I didn't know her personality - so I thought fast - she was named Penelope. I am just heartsick. Poor McCaskill - she's the best mom of the lot and now she doesn't have a baby. Course, if anyone close by needs a nurse mare ..... (of course, you'd probably have to send your baby to me ;) She is a milk cow.

Have not booked any of my mares yet for 2009.........

I'm so sorry CLH. What a cute name you gave her though and it's nice of them to care. I hope the rest of the year brings much happier things for you.

So sorry to hear that. Glad you were able to at least get her buried. Poor little thing and poor McCaskill. Praying here that our two foal out with no complications or problems with the mares or foals.

RIP Penelope. That is tough luck. I am sorry for your loss. One of my mares had a stillborn filly five years ago, and I still think about what we lost. This is a tough business.

Madelyn - she was a few weeks early - she was due 1/24.

Thanks guys. Appreciate your warm thoughts. McCaskill came home today from the vets and is doing well and looking very fit (and trim I might add). She is also in heat. Hopefully these three yearling colts won't realize what that means yet (YIKES)!!

You could tell the other mares knew why she had left and what she was supposed to come back with. Allou stuck her head up to the stall as if to say to McCaskill "okay, where's the little brat at?" McCaskill just looked at her as if to say "what brat, I have no idea what you are talking about". Horses are so wonderful that way - lose a baby and in a matter of a few days they forget about it.

It would be easier for me to forget about it if the box of cremated remains weren't sitting on the laundry room counter  Probably should find another place to put them before I host a "real baby" shower next week - but I can't bury them yet and this box is small enough I'm afraid to put it in the garage or barn. PROBLEM SOLVED: I'll move it to my closet :) It's always nice to come here and be among friends when it comes to the mares and foals (and other critters and grandchildren ;)

So sorry to hear of your loss, Cheryl. You know we've been there, too. It's very tough. I hope the rest of the season goes better for you.

On another sad note, we lost Galway Song tonight. I did a post on the General Forum.

Dear clh

Very sorry for the loss of Penelope, one of God's creatures! Sorry also for McCaskill. May the Good Lord bless her very dearly and may free her soon from all root of sadness. Amen.
