I didn't mind it at all, nor did trainer hubby. It wasn't soap opera-ish as we feared and did portray the changes in careers of the newbie, hot bug, journey man, and on his way out older guy (Mike's fears, not my words). I think it was the best thing meant for "outsiders" that I have ever seen on TB racing.

In general I liked it, and I think the showing of horses falling were to draw viewers into caring about the jockeys more than the horses. Right or wrong, that seems to be the M.O. of the show --the lives of jockeys more than anything else. Obviously that's only one piece of the equation, and frankly may not be the #1 care for people on this board (including myself) so i guess for me its best to judge this program for what it is.

I will say one thing, I did find myself this Sunday rooting for Kayla Stra's mounts at Santa Anita, and in fact she won a race! So I guess that's one person they reached.

I did find the dubbing of Trevor's fake calls annoying as well as wondering if Talamo and Gryder were really such supposed rivals. I think the Smith/Sutherland romance/competitor angle is probably the strongest potential so far in the series.

Well, in some ways, it is like the "stars" say: Any publicity is good publicity, even bad publicity!

At least someone is talking about racing. And the staged parts, which is almost all of the footage except the actual races, are probably not too far from representing a condensed reallity.

We really don't think that all those scenes from "Survivor" or "Apprentice" or "the Great Race" are not staged, do we?

The idea is to represent what goes on to a degree, not capture it.

If you've ever spent much time in a jock's room, it just isn't that interesting, and that which is of interest is not printable!

I say well done to Animal Planet for taking it on - slanted view or not.

I like the show.....the massive amount of commercials are a pain though!!

In the last show, the one thing I found odd was when the male apprentice won his first race they "initiated" him with cold water and eggs. However, when the girl from Australia won her first race they didn't show the "initiation" happening to her. There was really no reason not to show it so I am assuming it didn't happen??

I wonder if she has a separate jock room and that's why or perhaps there is still prejudice against female riders........

I wondered about that myself, and then decided that since she had been a successful jockey from Australia and the kid was actually winning his first race, that was the difference in treatment. I also suspect that the females must have a section of the jocks room cordoned off for their use when they need it. They may not need it if they do have it since most if not all female athletes wear sport underwear and when in a rush can change with the men since there is not much to see, when they wear the athletic underwear. Neither of the two women featured in this show are the shy, retiring type so seems to me if there were any oogling going on the female jocks would smack the ooglers "upside the head" so to speak.

It seemed to me that the kid's initiation was for his first "Santa Anita" win and that he had won somewhere else before. I did feel bad for him though when his dad said he was too busy to watch the race. I really like the show - I think I caught 4 episodes this weekend. They do a really good job with the cliffhangers.

She won 220 races in Australia. It wasn't her first win. I don't think the other initiation was a real one, either. It was just his first win at SA, so his friends gave him the egg treatment. But for a real firster, they'd paint him with shoe polish and hoof treatment.

The episode I saw last night was interesting especially the segment where one of the jocks got yelled at by one of the trainers for "letting his horse get away from him" causing the fractions to be too fast and that trainers horse lost because of it. The jock he yelled at was riding another trainers horse and wound up off the board. It was a real eye opener about the politics that go on. I am surprised that blurb wasn't edited out and hopeful that the producer encourages the cameraman to keep poking his nose into where some will think it doesn't belong.
The part about Ron Ellis's daughter dating Joe T was cute.

I love how Ron said that at first he was trying to think of ways to ruin Joe's career. :lol:

Gotta love protective dads. I was watching the expressions of the girls with her when Joe was riding. When he finishes last you could just sort of see 'i thought he was supposed to be a good jockey, that was certainly unimpressive' cross their faces. At the very least I think they were shocked at the brevity of it. I'm not so sure those girls appreciate racing too much. She does cuz her dad's a trainer. I'll bet at least part of the appeal of of going would be that they knew they'd be on camera and he's supposed to be a young hot shot. Maybe it's unfair, I just used to know girls like that at her age who probably wouldn't appreciate that it's not like running up 20 pts on a basketball court.

How about fans/grooms/owners/trainers screaming at jockeys who win or lose and wreck their triactor! There is no lack of things to vent frustration on as a jock is going to put his/her head down and walk back to the room.

Jocks will "paint" other riders for any excuse. I have seen riders with thousands of wins get painted at a new track. It is a little funny when it is a minor track that they just came in to ride a stake at. It is ironic, and breaks up the boredom for those who don't ride many.

Compared to how racing is portrayed in series television, I find this show a breath of fresh air. Yes they show the horses going down, but when it's in that episodes footage they show rider ok and horse ok.

This is what racing needs to draw in new fans, it shows the human side of racing. Yes, I know racing is all about the horse, but you can't forget the human side of it either. This is their lives.

I like the show.
