Blinkers Question - Friesan Fire

Postby pfrsue » Tue Mar 17, 2009 2:28 pm

Okay, obviously it isn't bothering him, but I'm wondering if the red on one side and white on the other could be irritating to a horse or affect its way of going? It's not a matter of color, but of dark/light.

Personally, I think I'd be running sideways if I had to wear 'em. :)

I doubt it makes much difference to the horse:

You would think it would be different, one being light and the other dark. In the photo it looks as if the red has more of a shadow and the white doesn't.

That's the thing. I know horses perceive colors differently that we do (although the chart is neat to for reference) but it was light vs. dark that made me scratch my head. You'd think, especially on a bright sunny day, that the horse would react to that. I can imagine doing that on purpose (if the horse tended to run out, maybe the darker shade would discourage it?) but in this case it looks like it's just for decoration as part of the owner's colors.

Have a lot of other horses worn blinkers like that and I just haven't noticed? I know Secretariat had checkered blinkers, for instance, but both eye cups were dark blue.
