Hello,
I have been told that horse born in late April and May are seriously handicapped. However I looked at the KD field and saw alot of good Derby horses that were born in may.
Pioneer of the nile - May 10th
Friesian Fire My b- Day April 30th
Regal Ransom May 26
Mine that bird May 10th
Musket Man May 10th
Gen Quarters May 7th
May 2 for Atomic Rain
Desert Party april 26th
They dont looked handicapped to me.. there is hope for the late born babbies
born later seems not to matter

I think, especially if you are not planning to sell the foal at auction, that the birthday impacts when you might start the horses initially at the racetrack. So if you are planning to race the foal yourself, then you can just wait until it is mature enough to race. If you were planning to sell the later born foals could be a little smaller, and not sell as well. As time goes on the birthday becomes less important.

It's hard to see how just a few weeks can create a serious handicap. As you've proven for yourself, the person who told you that was wrong.

LB
I would be carefull with telling people that are the stallion owners of the horse that I was looking to bred to that they are wrong.
I dont know if you know alot of Cal farms that have stallions, but I do have to watch the P'S and Q's when it come to something really specific as this. Because simply im just pulling these few names up and not doing alot of research like Louis is doing.
I think I would like to say," hey these horses are out there. And that crop of Late April/ May babies looks good.

karenkaren, I'm not advocating telling stallion owners they're wrong, I'm just saying that you shouldn't believe everything you hear. Just because someone says something doesn't mean they know what they're talking about. Especially in the horse business.
You pulled up some examples to dispute what you were told but beyond your list there are many, many more including--as Madelyn pointed out--Northern Dancer who was born on May 27th. So really, the fact remains, no matter where the info came from, it was incorrect.

Oh no no
Im saying You LB shouldnt say that.. Im saying it wouldnt be in my favor it I went back to the lady and said hey.... Your wrong!...
I think what Im trying to find are the examples that were born late that did well.
Im having jitters because my mare isnt near ready and 340 days was today. So anything to show that there are others out there the were born in May.. it would help my jitters.

What Im trying to tell you, It wouldnt be in my favor to tell an owner of a farm that holds a stallion that I am interested in, that she is wrong.
I said I should be carefull with my P's and Q's. with this experiment. Esp since I created this thread to find more May colts and fillies that have done well.
