Which stallion would you choose?

Postby Roguelet » Sun May 10, 2009 4:05 pm

I have my own thoughts already but thought I would throw this question out there for suggestions/comments.

The mare is Classy Patty; I am deciding whether to breed her to Indy Mood or Private Lap. Hypomating can be found HERE to both stallions if that helps.

Patty is unraced, but not due to any soundess issues that would be passed on. Both stallions are also sound, and none of the three have any conformation issues. Patty would be a fine physical match with either stallion. I am breeding to race, not for the sales, and I tend to send babies out to start late, so I'm not concerned about late developers.

So, basically, I'm asking for opinions based upon pedigree alone.

Thanks! :)

On Pedigree Alone I like the cross with Private Lap best. You get 5x5 Hail to Reason, 5x5 Native Dancer, plus 3x5 Mr. Prospector through two different sons.

The 9% Riva Ridge blood with the resulting foal from Indy Mood is pretty interesting. Not sure I remember seeing that much of him in a pedigree recently.

Try to avert your eyes from the GSV from both breedings...

I'd go with Indy Mood...

I saw the Riva Ridge inbreeding, found it interesting too, and researched it. There is inbreeding to bring in good influences, and then there is inbreeding just because it is curious.

Of the Graded Stakes Winners included in the G1 Goldmine, there is ONE GSW who has inbreeding to Riva Ridge in the first five generations. Conversely, there are 253 GSW's inbred to Hail to Reason, 168 inbred to Mr. Prospector, and 1432 inbred to Native Dancer. I probably should have included this data with my first post.

No ONE would ever confuse RR with Hail to Reason, Mr. P, or Native Dancer from an influence standpoint...but frankly, inbreeding to these prolifics are dime a dozen. I doubt you're thinking that there's a good chance that this mare will produce a GSW because of the inbreeding to these common names...

Thank you for your thoughts.

I was leaning toward Indy for several reasons. I liked the Seattle Slew - Mr. P nick, in addition to the Riva Ridge, and I liked that Indy is free of Mr. P (too much Mr. P scares me a bit.) The DI is identical for both crosses, but the GSV for Indy is slightly higher... probably not enough to make much difference, though. The conduit mare profile is also nicely balanced with Indy.

However, my other half is leaning more toward Private Lap, and I wasn't looking at Goldmine or anything like that, so that information bears considering. The conduit mare profile for Private Lap leans more toward speed, which could be a good thing since there are more sprints out here than routes... though I believe they are going to work toward correcting that bias...

Geesh... luckily she's not in heat yet, so I have a few more days to stew on this, at least.
