My immediate assumption was that Smith's decision to take Madeo as the Belmont mount had more to do with his relationship with John Shireffs than Mine That Bird. He has a lot to lose by pissing him off and, especially since MTB and his connections pretty much don't rate as major players, it would be political-suicide. If it seems unsporting to fans, it is; riding racehorses is Mike Smith's career, not his sport.

It's as simple as Mike Smith, a business man, staying in business.
There isn't a lot of call for horses from New Mexico at Del Mar and Santa Anita, at least on a regular basis.
Do you take the Moss Machine, or a couple of cowboys who met during a bar fight?
No offense to bar fighting cowboys, they just tend not to own as many Grade 1 horses as does Jerry Moss.

Mike Smith seems to really like MTB... I dont think he meant to diss him either.

Well, supposedly our TC races are suppoosed to be something special. ,
If this is the way we treat our Kentucky Derby winner, and it's all just "business as usual", then I'm not going to bother with it next year.
If it's gotten to the point where it's so about money, and about connections "owning" jockeys, then why bother to pretend this is our most important race series and that it's about the HORSES?
Looks to me it's become all about the humans, instead of the horses.
Humans who can't "get off" the train for one very important race series, which American's keep "telling us" is our most important races series, bla blah blah.
I do find it somewhat disturubing that the winner of the KY Derby is left without a rider twice now.
The horses are so less important that the riders and their business deals, I guess.

like it or not, mike smith is not a charity worker. Yes, he is going to put the owners that gave him his only derby winner, a mutliple grade 1 winner and auto BC Classic horse every year in Tiago, questoinalby the best filly in a long long time in zenyatta,he is going to stop all that for sentimenal values to owners and connections that have done nothing for him?
the kentucky derby is 1 race. it's a very important race, but again. one race.

It has always been about the people. That doesn't mean that those people don't love horses, or that thoroughbreds are not special in the hearts of many, including you and me.
But when it costs $150 a day to keep a derby calibre horse in Kentucky or Southern California, you better believe that people look at parts of it like a business.
They have to. Hence, Mike Smith's choice, and the Moss's insistance that Mike ride their horse.
