Eclipse Award - Horse Of The Year

Postby wangkw » Mon May 18, 2009 5:13 am

Since inception (1984) there were 25 editions of the Breeders Cup Classic..a total of 11 winners were subsequently named horse of the
year in the year.

Since 1984 there were 16 triple crown near misses, 4 of them were named horse of the year.

Since 1984 there were 3 horse of the year which won both BC Classic and at least a leg in the triple crown in the year viz.
Curlin, Sunday Silence & A.P. Indy (horse of the year Ferdinand & Alysheba did it but not in the same year).

Since 1984 there were 3 horse of the year which were not a winner of the BC Classic but won at least a leg in the triple crown in the year.

Since 1984 there were 8 horse of the year which won the BC Classic but was not a winner of any of the triple crown races in the year.

Since 1984 there were 11 horse of the year which were neither a winner of the BC Classic nor a triple crown race in the year.

Since 1984 Unbirdled is the only horse which won both BC Classic and a triple crown race (Kentucky Derby) but was not named horse of
the year.

When RA & Zenyatta meet, that will decide the HOY.

There are a lot of races yet to be run. I'd say the speculation is a little bit premature. :)

Since 1887...only 6 ladies were named horse of the year :

Imp 1800
Meridian 1904
Beldame 1911
All Along 1983
Lady's Secret 1986
Azeri 2002

Hope I didnt miss out anyone... so the top title is pretty much stallion heavy.

Yes lots of races to be run but I agree at this point RA is the front runner. Lots of horses could go on a tear and take HOY. Einstein, Quality Road, even Charitable Man are few that come to mind.

We have ~105 grade 1s each year, and 23 have been run so far in 2009. Of those, we've only had two open non-turf races for 3YO & up [ the Donn and the Big Cap ], and we're already talking HOTY !?

Lots of racing to come ... Saratoga, Belmont fall meet, Keeneland fall meet, BC. IMO, it's possible that this year's (future) HOTY still hasn't even won yet this year.

Miss zenyatta was the 2008 champion older female and her wins of 4G1 & 3G2 were all in 2008..so these have been "spent"
last year ..she now needs fresh pile from scratch....RA already got 2G1 & 2G2 all in 2009 incl coveted Oaks and Preakness.

Even if Zen gets another win in Ladies Classic it wont be enough..but if RA races against her and wins that race, Zen will be shut
out for good. My view is that if RA converts in Ladies Classic..it will still depend on others..MTB is one of them for sure...Einstein
is a menacing long shot....there are others...It seems this year's Breeders' Cup program will throw up more fireworks and
excitement.

Please note 11 of the 25 BC Classic winners were named horse of the year. The statistics I put up indicated that
BC Classic ranked before any of the 3yo triple crown classic (a triple crown has been ruled out this year).

Day is still young..the field is full of variables.

Good luck to each of them.

For HOY..BC Classic is certainly the decider in case of a tie..next best is jockey club gold cup (JCGC).

LAVA MAN had 4G1 & 1G2 but lost HOY to BC Classic winner Invasor in 2006..the latter had 4G1 in total.

Curlin bagged both 2007 BC Classic & JCGC among his total 3G1 & 1G2.

Curlin hit 4G1 (incl Dubai World Cup & JCGC) in 2008 and won the title from Big Brown ( 4G1), which had such sizzling form in
winning F Derby, K Derby and Preakness. It gave me impression a good race outside US jurisdiction carried weight too in the
eclipse voting process.

HOY will go to TC by default..so that is out..btw 1995 & 2008 only two dual leg TC winners won HOY...Point Given(5G1 1G2)
in 2001 and Charismatic (2G1 1G2) in 1999. Cat Thief (2G1) won 1999 BC Classic but lost the title (to Charismatic). Artax
was another beaten horse that year despite his wins of 3G! & 1G2, including the BC Sprint ..Silic (2G1), 1999 BC Mile winner,
was also defeated. So the year 1999 was the biggest upset for all BC winners as far as the HOY title was concerned.

Apart from Big Brown..TC near-misses Silver Charm (2G1) and Real Quiet(2G1) were also among the defeated. But in both these
2 years HOY were neither a winner of the BC Classic nor The JCGC. Skip Away (HOY1998) won 5G1 & 2G2 and Favorite Trick
(HOY1997) won 2G1 & 2G2 including the BC Juvenile.

My verdict is that both Point Given and Skip Away won the yearly title by their own right.

Mineshaft won itself the 2003 title with 4G1(incl JCGC) & 1G2.

Azeri beat all the boys with 5G1 & 2G2 in 2002. Her win included BC Distaff (renamed to BC Ladies'Classic), bringing War Emblem
(3G1 1G2), Harlan's Holidays (2G1), Medaglia DÓro (1G1 2G2), and Came Home(2G1 3G2) to their knees.

Zenyatta didn't manage to claim HOY in 2008 with her record of 4G1 & 3G2 which bettered Curlin, HOY. I believed she was just
1 G1 away from the HOY status last year.

My feeling is that eclipse voters are, generally, less impressed with age or sex restricted races.

Turf races are likewise less favored than classic (dirt).

Should there be any error in above..do not hesitate to point out.
