World's Filly Triple Crown

Postby wangkw » Sat May 23, 2009 6:58 am

Only few major racing nations have triple crown event specifically for fillies :

US Version : Also called Triple Tiara, comprising one 1 1/8 mile and two 1 1/4 mile all on dirt track. Total distance : 29f. Only 8 fillies of
3 yo have won the title so far. Not closely followed in racing community.
A modified version often referred to by racing fans is the so called mixed triple crown consisting of Kentucky Oak, The Preakness and The
Belmont Stakes. There is no filly winner under this version.

Canadian Version : Also called Triple Tiara
All 26 1/2 furongs on polytrack synthetic dirt. Not followed closely.

Point Given filly Sealy Hill is the only horse that won this title in 2007.

UK Version : Oaks, 1000 Guineas & St Leger
These races cover respectively 12f, 8f and 14 1/2f on turf. This is the world's longest total for the filly title.
8 horses have achieved that : Oh So Sharp (1985) Sun Chariot (1942) Pretty Polly (1904) Sceptre (1902) La fleche (1892) Apology (1874)
Hannah (1871) & Formosa (1868)

Irish Version : Oaks, 1000 Guineas & St Leger
Their distances are the same as the UK counterpart except the St Leger is 1/2f shorter. All 3 races are also run on turf.
No filly triple crown winner.

Japanese Version : Oka Shu Yushun Himba Shuka Sho
All 3 turf races cover resp 1 m (8f), 1 1/2 m (12f) and 1 1/4 m (10f). The total distance is 30 furongs.There are 2 fillies which won this :
Still In Love (2003) Mejiro Ramonu (1986)

......

What races do they have for 3 yo fillies in Canada that are 26 1/2f? I actually have never even heard of the Triple Tiara in Canada - which races comprise it?

Thanks - interesting. 9 furlongs, 8-1/2 furlongs on poly, and then 9 furlongs on turf.

Dance Smartly WOULD have won it, but she was too busy beating up on colts and winning Canada's other Triple Crown.

Davona Dale won the KY Oaks, the Acorn, the Black Eyed Susan, the Mother Goose and the Coaching Club American Oaks. Can you imagine if a colt did something comprable? He'd be considered a super horse, in order for that title to be on a colt all he has to win is the TC.

She was one awesome filly!!!!

Agreed. :)

Open Mind did all that, plus the Alabama, and can't even get in to the Hall of Fame! Colts today got it easy.

Ooops, my mistake....Open Mind won the Pimlico Oaks, not the Black-Eyed Susan.

Everything else still applies.

Hopefully Open Mind will get in, I agree though, the colts do have it easier and they run for more money. Doesn't seem fair does it?

Winds

Are you saying it's not fair that fillies can run in all three triple races but colts and geldings can not run in Oaks and other desiginated filly races??

Yes and no. The race we now call the Black-Eyed Susan was called the Pimlico Oaks through 1951.

A new Pimlico Oaks started being run in the late '80s, but it was not run on Preakness week....I believe it was meant as a prep for the Kentucky Oaks, but don't quote me on that. I don't think it is run any more, but don't quote me on that, either.

Open Mind won it in 1989, while Imaginary Lady took that year's Black-Eyed Susan.

I know this was not addressed to me (and I apologize to Winds for stepping in), but the point being made is that a filly has to accomplish a lot more than a colt would in order to be considered a great horse.

A filly can win every major event in her division, and still can be forgotten by years' end....while a colt only needs to take three lil' races to be a shoo-in for immortality.

The Preakness Stakes has been termed "The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans" because a blanket of Black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta, the state flower of Maryland) is traditionally placed around the winner's neck...note Susan in plural form .

Preaknes Stakes and Black-eyed Susan Stakes : diff distance, diff grade status, big diff in prize money, big diff in race history,
open vs restricted.

BES was Pimlico Oaks before 1952.

Lucy

And what happens to a filly that happens to win those same three little races??
