Running out of time...Need mating advise

Postby Happy » Fri May 29, 2009 8:37 am

I am running out of time to breed my mare Tour of the Rose. I usually sent to KY, but this year I need to stay in the Mid-Atlantic. I just can't seem to find a stallion in this area I like with her. Any suggestions would be appreciated. She was a hard knocking sprinter and earned $273,000.
She has good conformation, well balanced and is almost 16 hands.[/img]

Hi Happy --

Breeding to race or sell? Where will she foal?

Request for Parole would reinforce the best parts of her pedigree in a gender balanced sort of way and soundness of the foal is not likely to be an issue.

I would sell privately and if it did not sale I would race it myself. I will foal in PA, WV or maybe Maryland. But I think PA and WV are my best options. Thanks to all for the suggestions. It's enlighting to get someone else view and sure is helpful. Things I did not think of or was afraid it was too much of the same thing.

Actually, I recognized her name because I'd seen her somewhere before & matched her with one of our stallions (graded stakes-winning 6-7f horse named Mountain Top who stands in PA), who is a new regional sire, i.e., not at all commercial, so if you're even thinking of selling, you'd need to think long & hard about trying the cross, although I'd be happy for it. We have a mare from Tour d'Or's immediate family in the broodmare herd -- I like the bloodlines together that much.

Having said that -- either Two Punch or Not For Love are the MidAtlantic sires who would give the most likelihood of a buyer - private or at auction. Although if any stallions in the region have full books, it will be those two.

But I like her best with Dance with Ravens - sex-balanced cross-matches with Danzig & Secretariat & he's from the same family as Smart Strike, so his dam's side is good. Also, Dance with Ravens is family 23-b & Tour of the Rose is family 23 -- there are some families that seem to to have a more pronounced 'nick' with a female family than with a sire-to-sire line, IMHO.

Best of luck.

Agree with KBEquine on all..

However, if you are looking for a royal pedigree and a bred-to-race take a look at Civilisation [Gone West X Toussuad] at NayLee Farm in WV.. He has four G-1 siblings, including some big name stallions. Civilisation lost an eye in an training accident.

Civilisation was bred by Juddmonte and Toussaud blood is limited.. In addition, Mountaineer is now paying 135% breeder/owner bonuses on the purses won by WVBREDs. Charles Town will vote on table gambling next month and that should increse their WVBRED breeder/owner bonus.

Civilisation get mature late and since this would also be a late 2010 foal you'd be set to wait and start your foal as a 3 YO..

My mares can't touch the quality of your mare but I have two 3 YO Civilisation geldings I started late and am very pleased with their progress to date..

PM me if you are interested in more detail.

I actually tried to think of 'the right cross' with a WV sire, but figured Griff would make a suggestion & I defer to Griff on the WV sires & the WV program, in general.

Thanks for all the good information. I love Round Table in Moutain Top, not to mentioned all the other bloodlines from "The Old World" as I call it. It really is hard to find a stallion with those bloodlines so close up. Good Luck with him. He maybe something I would consider down the road.

Two Punch and Not For Love seems to be the general consenses to send her to, but unable to reach them.

Also like Dance with the Ravens with her and Fantasticat looks pretty good that someone else mentioned he also had his first winner this month.

By the way, you can usually find "other than Northview" and less expensive breedings to Two Punch using Google.

And you can make a MD Sired foal into a WVBRED that is eligible for both the Maryland Millions as well as WVBRED incentives.

Thanks for your input Griff. Civilisation does have some very good blood.

I have already bred two of my other mares Halo Corley Girl and Boston Princess to Makin. Princess has already produced a runner with him. The WV program is a vey good like you stated. I just think they are going to be really nice foals. Princess first foal from Makin was only 4 months old when a trainer from Fla visit our farm and the foal was in the stall with Princess and all the trainer said was, How Much? He raced as a two year old. Made 18 hours trip from Ocala Fla on two different occassions. Arriving at CT mid day and raced that night and came in 2nd twice in MSW. Her 3 year old Bowman's Band is being syndicated for $44,500. Corley was not 100% when she raced and I'll always remember the announcer saying what an honest filly she was.

My other 3 mares I sent to PA to be bred.

Tour is the only one that really has given me a fit as to make the right choice for her. I still have a short time and I mean short time before I make my choice. Again thanks for your input.

If you're looking for proven horse at a reasonable price its hard to beat Outflanker.

You can breed to MD or other stallions and make the resulting foal a PABRED by boarding the in-foal mare in PA from Oct 01, 2009 until it is born in PA..

The PABRED breeder's bonus is 30% in that case instead of 40% for PABREDs that are sired by PA stallions.

WVBREDs by outside stallions must be born in WV and their dams must be bred back to a WV stallion..

One more point::

If you are looking to breed speed to speed take a look at Stored..

He's by Coronados Quest [Forth Niner/ Damacus] but more important his dam is Safely Kept, winner of the G-1 Breeders Cup Sprint and a half dozen regional Breeders Cup races with $2 plus million in winnings.. Elipse Champion sprinter.

I like Albert The Great. Crosses Ribot and ND with her through different lines.

Take a look at Country Only at Naylee Farm also. My girlfried has one of his 2 yr olds training at Delaware Park. WHAT A STIDE!! and just floats across the track. Try nicking him with your mare. There's also a filly that is training at Charles Town, but I don't know her name.
