What about a race AFTER the Breeders Cup on a neutral track (Tx?, Chicago?). Give Zenyatta a chance to recover after the BC and give them a crack at each other before the year end. Of course if either of them loses between now and then the glamour for the event is lost. Maybe get some sponsorship from Alberto Culver or some other business that markets women's products. Extra time would allow RA to fully mature. Dp it on one of the slow weekends after the college football conference championships but before the NFL takes Saturdays.

Run the race - the one that's really worth winning.

1. balance and zenyatta could not, at least to me, be any more different. Balance was real...what's the word i'm looking for.. Finicy. I can't explain it. when she was on she was tough as nails, but I think she underachived a little considering what her talent level was. I don't know if it was nagging injuries or whatever the case may be. she wasn't as consistant as zenyatta and i'd never guess they were related, let alone half sisters.
2. when was it decided that big z was not going out of cali?

Humm.
Here is an interesting dilemma
I think we can all say, or agree, that unless something unreal happens, the HOY is a 2 horse race between big z and Rachael. At least I think it is.
Ok.
What if....
and this is very, very possible actually. if not likely.
]
Rachael Wins the haskell. Wins the personal Ensign. Wins whatever 2 more races they run her in this year, assuming they are against older fillies and / or boys, but NOT the breeders cup.
Zenyatta wins the lady's secret, wins the lady's classic.
WHO GETS HORSE OF THE YEAR?
man that's a tough one.

For this scenario, Rachel gets it IMO.
Now, if Zenyatta runs in the BC Classic and beats the boys, then it would be her title IMO.
It could very well come down to just this.

i think so too
i think it would be a travesty if zenyatta goes say, 14 for 14 in her career and never wins a horse of the year award.
but that's EXACTLY what is going to happen if she doesn't step up to the plate and either face rachael or face boys.

You may be right, but let's be honest. Who's ducking who here? It's not like Zenyatta is avoiding Rachel. Moss and Shireffs have been pretty forthright about their plans for Zenyatta and then even considered altering those plans in order to set up a confrontation between the two when Jackson made it clear that Rachel was not going to the BC.
Rachel's camp, on the other hand, has been a bit evasive about their plans for her. Will she run against boys? Maybe. Will she run against older mares? Perhaps. Will she stay in her division? Could be. Zenyatta can't "step up to the plate" if they aren't clear about where she's running and/or they run her in races where Zenyatta is not eligible.
In my mind, Zenyatta is the champ and it's her title to lose. If Rachel wants it, she has to come get her. I understand that I may be in the minority with this view, but that's how I see it.
