Anyone know the saying about which side of the neck a horse's mane is supposed to lay on?

It was just for informative purposes, I like to try and remeber things like that and somehow forgot it. Like don't set your hat on the bed, don't leave straw on a fork all bad luck!

Well it goes back to the calvary days when most people wore their sword on the left side so they could grab it with their right hand. On the right side it is out of the way of the sword.

Thanks for that Laurie, now I can feel justified for leaving however it wants to lay and I have the perfect answer for those folks who cannot leave well alone. Unless of course I am called up for a cavalry charge at Gettysburg.

Or unless you have a weanling or yearling going to the sales - then your consignor will tell you it is important enough that if it lays on the left to braid it until it lays on the right

Or if you're going to a horse show. The judges notice things like that too. :)

In actuality. it doesnt matter anymnore, there is no steadfast rule in the hunter/jumper world or dressage world, on which is correct, it has come to whichever side your horses mane lays naturally on, you can legally braid on that side, you will not be penalized for what side your horses mane lays on in todays upper level show world, maybe an oldtimer judge at a backyard show will still stick with that old rule, but not the the recognized shows. be advised, for all those that love to porve wrong and argue :D that I am only speaking of the dressage , and H/J rings, I know nothing of the quarter horse worls anymore, gave up on that long ago :)

That is so not true. The higher the level of english riding the more nit picky they get. If you braided on the left you might as well stay home. If there were five horses in the class you still wouldn't pin.

HHMMGHH, maybe it is changing back, I know that the top A circuit people I have groomed for, not recently though, and the Olympic medalists in dressage that I have ridden in clinics with, when I would ask which is the proper side to train my horses unruly mane on, said simply, "it doesnt matter anymore which side, the quality of the braiding and grooming will get you further than which side the mane lays on". I know that in dressage, which is more what I trained in the last few years, it absolutely DOESNT MATTER, in other countries they dont bother trimming the ears and muzzle either, which I have noticed is becoming a trend, finally :D here in the upper level dressage rings as well, never see that in the H/J world for sure :D
