Smarty Jones yearling sells for 10K, what did I miss?

Postby wgc517 » Thu Sep 17, 2009 3:31 pm

I was looking through the results and saw this. Did anyone see this horse? I am wondering why he only went for 10k.

I had a Fu Peg colt out of that same dam, he couldn't outrun me and is now a kids trail horse.

The commercial market has dropped Smarty like a hot potato, and with good reason.

His summer/fall yearlings have sold so far for:

$4,000
$8,000
$10,000
$10,000
$15,000
$25,000
$65,000

And the worst is yet to come as those were from Saratoga select and Keeneland Books 1 and 2.

He's still got 28 cataloged in Keeneland books 3,4,5,6, and 7 who will probably sell even worse than those who've sold so far.

The best thing for Smarty is to move to Pennsylvania and stand for 5k.

If they insist on keeping Smarty at Three Chimney's in Kentucky they're doing him a disservice.

While it's very unlikely to happen to him, let's not forget how Sky Mesa looked just about a year and a half ago. His stud record was comparable if not worse than Smarty's is at the moment.

Arch was another that took a few years to start producing quality. His first two crops were such a huge disappointment that his fee was slashed to under 5k.

I don't know if I'd breed to him even for $5,000.

Pretty much. At least he is good for something and has a great home with people who adore him.

what do you miss?

The economic downturn. Yearling sales has plummetted across the board for almost all sires.

I knew that mare's name looked familiar...glad to hear Laurie that your Fu Peg colt is doing all right.

Well he is no longer a colt but yes he is doing great. We actually went on a hunter pace a couple of years ago. I rode Mark and my friend rode Sky. We were both decked out in our pink of course.
