Just finished reading a The Horse article on tapeworms and the chart at the end of the article seems to indicate pregnant mares should not be wormed with Zimectecin Gold, Quest Plus or Equimax,
I've been giving Zimecterim Gold and Equimax durning the second trimester and thought it claimed to be safe for pregnant mares.. Am I reading the chart in The Horse wrong or do I need to stop using Zimecterin Gold and equimax on pregnant mares?/

depending on how much you believe what you read, i found this on the internet - http://www.drugs.com/vet/zimecterin-gold-paste.html"
Animal Safety
ZIMECTERIN® GOLD Paste may be used in horses two months of age or older. ZIMECTERIN® GOLD has not been tested in foals younger than two months of age, mares at or near the time of breeding, pregnant or lactating mares, and breeding stallions. ZIMECTERIN® GOLD Paste, when tested at 1, 3 and 5-times the maximum recommended dose every two weeks in 5-month old foals, and at 10-times the maximum recommended dose in a separate study, did not elicit any adverse clinical signs of toxicity. In a foal safety study in younger animals, ZIMECTERIN® GOLD Paste was found safe up to 3-times the maximum recommended dose in 2-month old foals.

Zimectrin Gold is a good one to cross off your list for any horse. It has a side effect of mouth ulcers in many horses. Equimax is a better product without the risk of mouth ulcers. Not sure about using it in pregnancy though. I too have used equimax without incident during pregnancy but may substitute something else if its not recommended.
For what it's worth we've been using Equimax for quite some time now, for our mares & babies, with absolutely no ill effects. I'd stay away from Zimectrin Gold though !!!
As a matter of fact on our veterinarians website they actually recommend the Equimax.

What I have been told is that Equimax made the studies and can claim the safety of their product. The other companies haven't invested the money for the studies and can't claim their safety. It doesn't mean they aren't safe, just that they can't make the claim. I have used equimax just because they can legally make the claim.

don't know if the makers of Zimecterin Gold have funded a study or not but they are certainly making claims their product is safe for pregnant mares..
It containes less Ivemectin and less Praziguantul than Equimax but then I belive the "The Horse.Com" article on tape warms said no to both and that was my concern

Here's what the tube of Zimectrin Gold I currently have in my hands says ( and I paraphrase ) :
... Zimectrin gold may be used in foals over 5 mos. of age. Zimectrin gold has not been tested in foals less than 5 mos. of age, pregnant mares or breeding stallions.
Guess I'd call that truth in advertising but as mentioned earlier it doesn't say it isn't safe ... they just can't claim it is 'cause they haven't bothered to run a study so as I mentioned earlier ... stay away until they do. On the other hand Equimax, according to two thehorse.com articles & that tube I also currently have in my hands, has been tested and approved by the FDA for pregnant mares, foals over 3 mos. of age & breeding stallions. Said American tests were confirmed in a French study. Good enough for me !

After the mare foals, and before you get her bred again, I would imagine that would be the time to worm for tape worms. That is the only window we have. That would work for West Nile too, in case anyone has qualms about it.
