Indy Mood has a nice pedigree and is a strong looking horse, but apparently couldn't run. Look at the crested neck? The two Syrian Sea line mares that I have are very feminine.

This statement is innacurate, Roguelet has posted time and again that the horse was bandage-bowed, which is very different that "couldn't run".

Sorry. Really never heard about the bandage bow.

Getting back to the topic...

Indy Mood looks like he has the 'curly' ears that are supposed to go with Princequillo's heart gene (the tips curl back).

Image

But Rags to Riches doesn't, and her ears aren't small and leaf shaped like the Mahmoud ears (Fusaichi Pegasus has them).

Image

So she's not expressing the Princequillo heart gene she got from A.P. Indy. I don't have paid access to the database so can't see the X-genes. Any ideas on which heart gene(s) Better Than Honour might have?

Rags carries AP Indys X. If she didn't she'd be a he.

She may be expressing an X from bottom side of her pedigree.

Candidates

Deputy Minister. First Dam Sire 50% probability
Blushing Groom Second Dam Sire 25% probability
Traffic Judge Third Dam Sire 12.5% probability
Mr Busher Fourth Dam Sire 6.25% probability

My vote is with Deputy Minister.

Nice pictures of the family up on the Sporthorse Database

I did say that she has an X from AP Indy, but that she's not showing the Princequillo ears, so that X is probably inactive and the X she got from Better Than Honour is the one she's showing.

Just thought I'd clarify.

aethervox, no disrespect intended. I know you know that about the transmission of the X. However, there are lots of folks who read this forum who are not as well versed in the genetic side of the horse business. So when posting genetic info, I like to start with the basics.

X chromosome inactivation is a term that plays into the expression of the X.
Males have 1 X and 1 Y. Females have 2 X's. In females one X is "turned off" very early in embryonic development. Sometime between fertilization and implantation. The subsequent cell lines develop using the genes on the X that wasn't turned off.

So according to the X-factor theory, a mare or filly will express one X or the other. Colts have only one X, so they express that.

Does anyone have a conformation style photo of Rags? Or Man of Iron?

Shammy, you could PM Roguelet and ask her about Indy Mood. Are you looking to breed your girls back to the same family?

Xfactor Fan: I believe in breeding back. Indy Mood is very intriguing.

What do you think? You can do a hypothetical with Indy Mood (94) and Wild Skywalker (97). There is a hefty amount of duplication but the hypo is full of some very very nice horses and mares.

Indy Mood had a half sister who was very sucessful and was sent to Japan.

Interesting inbreeding to say the least. Three of Somethingroyal's kids, Secretariat, Sir Gaylord and Syrian Sea, distant lines to Man O'War, and Discovery.

Two questions, what do you intend to do with the foal, and how do the two horses match up physically?

I would really have to give any breeding like this some thought. I don't think I've seen a pedigree w/the depth of duplication this one carries. I am sure there are some but I've not come across any.

We're into hunt related breeding so the options are considerable depending on the offspring. Racing is an option, but it would be a first for us. I've got another youngster we're considering the same for.

Personally, I am less concerned with the sire's physical qualities matching. I am always surprised when I try to picture how a particular breeding evolves. Wild Skywalker looks like Somethingroyal and she did about the same on the track. I think both made about $500.

I was quite taken with Indy Mood's stats. It's so rare to find a stallion, lacking performance creditials, that has done well in the breeding shed.

By the way concerning the information you sent, there are three pictures of a horse's ears. Do you want them back. I didn't see any explanation.
