Mid-Atlantic Storm

Postby Barbaro06 » Sat Dec 19, 2009 10:46 am

Dug my driveway out of approximately 12" of snow, shovel is on its last leg. Will try to get out and try to find a new shovel tomorrow. As for the HOA, they haven't plowed the roads yet--nice.

It took me three hours to get home from DC last night. The last 20 miles were nerve wracking--the snow was coming down and I-95 was slick.

I think I'm going to curl up with my cat now.

I was out in a storm like that here last year - it took over 2 hours to go 12 miles. Slithering all over the place. At least, where you live, there actually ARE plows!! It's very tense, though, and I was in my little 3000GT classic car in that mess.

I have never in my life been in more than say.. 2 maybe 3 inches of snow. and that's pushing it.

i would like one day to jsut wake up and just see snow everywhere. everyone should experience something like that once.

We get snow maybe twice each winter. It lasts for few hours and they shut I-5 and hwy 14 down because of the hills and so many people without 4 wd or chains. Last year it snowed all afternoon, really rare and was a mess for commuters and truckers. The 2 previous years it was during the night and I stayed up just to see it. It made my yard look magical. Course the magic was in the barn so I found the next morning...a river had appeared from broken water line.
Hang in there Barbaro. Bailey's once you get home makes it all better :)

After 35+ years of living in Connecticut, I'm so glad that I no longer do. :)

I moved out of Maine to get out of this mess.... Now after almost three years down here we get hit with something very similar to the normal storms up there. I went out in it today just to check on the racehorses. Normally takes me 35 minutes. took me 1 1/2 hours. Not bad! And as for actualy having plows.. you'd never know it.. the roads were covered. And dumb people were actually out in little cars.. WHAT they are thinking I have no idea. I have a very capable expedition that I drove to Maine two years ago and it saw much worse.

Greetings from Pennsylvania, where we've got about 30 horses who live primarily in run-ins (which they frequently don't use in the weather, for reasons only THEY understand).

They have wind-breaks & roofs - if they want them. And free-choice hay & lots of it.

Me, I like the snow. Given we've got at least a foot here, that love of snow is a good thing.

The palomino TB stallion who lived most of his life in Georgia, Alabama & California - he might not enjoy it nearly as much . . .

took me 40 minutes to get from Laurel to Bowie, and that was pushing the limits, wondering when the track will finally resurface.

23.2 inches here in Philly. The most since January, 1996. And there's another one brewing for Christmas day.
Had my fill now. The good news, though, is it's a DRY snow. :P

Ended up with about 20" of snow. My back is aching and I'm thinking of getting a snow thrower. Knowing my luck, it won't snow like this for another 20 years!

I grew up in Wisconsin, but over the years have lived in places that don't get this much snow. I'm not used to being snowbound any more. The parkway I live off of hasn't been plowed either--so getting a new shovel might be out of the question. I'm supposed to have furniture delivered tomorrow and that's a 100-1 longshot now with the lack of clean-up here in the subdivision....

Time for some coffee! :D

I was thinking I should have advertised a snowblower for sale before this storm (it came with the house but we've always used the tractor, instead). My husband says, "Not so fast . . . we're expecting another snow . . ."

We are going no where for the next three or four days. We really got hit. I've got 24" in the driveway and some of the paddocks have up to 36" drifts.

What makes it worse is that my tractor has an ignition problem and it has decided not to start.

Just brought a mare in from NY. She is the only horse that is enjoying the snow.

The last snow we had like this was back in 1987. Looks like a 20 year cycle. Global warming is looking good to me now. :)

Oh my, and I thought we had snow in Europe! About two inches came down yesterday and today. In the afternoon it started raining a bit, but now it is dry. This morning I went on my bike, but I left it at work and my husband came with the car. Here in our village the road is very slippery and this morning there was a weather alarm. Racing is cancelled on several tracks in France, Germany and in my homecountry (trotters)Holland.
But children have xmas holidays and enjoy this weather (to be honest I do not!).

Must say however, I love to read your stories! Good luck to everyone.

We were at Tahoe skiing over New Years a few years ago during a storm. We got 4 ft over night one night. Cars were buried and anyone that wanted to go anywhere was shoveling and digging except us in our Hummer :D Put it in reverse and up and over the berm we go. It's also the easiest vehicle to launch a boat with too
