for sure owners ship to softer spots, but there's no way doug is going to ship a horse on his last leg across country hopeing he gets claimed.

I would love a softer market. Without California Speed. With massive purses. I might also like a nice maiden race going 4 1/2 without having to negotiate a turn. My own personal maiden would be a brilliant earning machine!!! And I would ship happily to find that exact race!!!

This is a business. And though I do take a stand for the horse, sometimes it's fate is mostly out of my hands.
I can be honest. Tell "so and so" that the horse is rough and no good, needs time and it often falls on deaf ears. I DO fight for the health and well being of the horses and people I work with. BUT it is not always an option where some human connections are concerned.
People (not necessarily the "Doug's" of the world) are the problem in all sports where animals are a commodity.
If everyone had the same goals and standards, it would be a better world.

Didn't you miss a few races? Three weeks before being entered at Philly, he ran for $16K at Hollywood ("ran" being a euphemistic term since he finished second to last). Before that, he was with Cerin (not O'Neill) at Woodbine.

Did anyone else notice too that he ran for almost twice as much money as a $5K claimer at Philly than as a $16K in California ($25,000 purse versus $14,000 in Hollywood). In fact, before his "drop" he was running (but not winning) for a $33,000 purse while being ostensibly a $40K horse.

Slot money has turned everything upside down. I know someone who's debuting a Calbred Bertrando filly in Pennsylvania because in his mind the competition is easier; there's more money and Calbred awards probably can't make up the difference.

In the meantime, Santa Anita is down a thousand head for this meet (2500 horses in the pool instead of 3500).

and synsonby's post is why this 5 page thread is a joke. AS she pointed out, a 5k race in PA pays almost 2 times more than a 15k claimer in Santa Anita. the fact that you can drop, REALLY drop a horse in class and MAKE MORE MONEY throws out any "trying to get rid of" arguement you can come up with.

although cal purses aren't THAT bad.. they just can't compete with PA.

PA is going to become the pinnacle of racing if we don't watch out

That's nice and all since the purse is better, but the thrill of winning a race in So. Cal outweights PA by like this much-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know. I would think that the thrill of actually having your horses pay their way would far outweigh the thrill of racing in SoCal.

Doug O'Neill's record so far at Philadelphia:

23 starts - 7 wins (30%), 4 seconds, 3 thirds (61% in-the-money)

The racing model in California is severely broken. Expenses completely overwhelm purse earnings for the majority of horses. Northern California is a complete joke where Maiden 8's run for $7700. Day rate @ 60 a day plus vet and shoe. You have no chance..

Unless you have an allowance/stakes horse you will loose money. A 16 and up claimer will break you even if he wins a few purses and of course will get claimed.. But if you own a maiden who cannot win a 40 starter and must compete with the 4 thru 12,500 NW-2 horses you are going to loose money period in Northern Ca.

At least you have a chance with a 5k horse running for a 15k pot but again the only way you will break even or make money is if he wins and gets claimed..

Exactly zinn. But it gets even worse down South.

All those Calbreds didn't hit the road looking for good weather.

Forgive me, but hasn't this thread taken on a new set of legs.

How long has Doug O'Neil been in PA? The stats seem to indicate he has more than just a few claimers running at Philly Park. I got the impression from Ageecee posts that DO had minor participation in PA. I guess not.

As a rule, because Philly Park operates early afternoon, I don't keep track of it like I do for Preque Isle and Penn National because they operate later in the day.

As another thought, I just love CA racing. I don't know anything about the politics going on, but I hope CA gets its act together. A couple of posts on this board and others have eluded to SA and Hollywood Park going the way of the sub-division. I hope that is not the case. I was so pleased to see Emerald Downs back on line.

Lastly, the purses in WV and PA are larger because of slots. It was a concession that the casinos had to make to the horsemen. If it wasn't for slots, Doug and others would be in DE, NJ, NY, and NE.

I think the owners of Penn National also own Charles Town and Presque Isle. I think MD passed slots, but I'm not sure what is going on. Stronach is trying to divest himself of MD. Maybe that is why MD is not doing anything significant.

It would be nice if some of these tracks could get some graded races to open the door to a wider range of talent, both horses and trainers alike.
