Hi Jorge,

Many thanks for the incredible photos and info. on First Secretary! I remember when he was born, they bred Secretariat to Leola to make sure he could sire a foal. What a gorgeous foal he was. My fav. kind of Appy, chestnut with the snowflake blanket.

The last posting you put on there shows his grandson, and how much he looks like him. I wonder how many offspring of First Secretary there are?

Thank you again, I so enjoyed those memories. I remember that there was a large 4 or 5 page spread done on First Secretary in the Appaloosa monthly magazine, I have it somewhere packed away at my parents' house, and there was also one of him in the TB magazine. I also do remember the outcry of some folks for breeding him to the Appy mare, but as the story goes, (if my memory does not fail me) Secretariat was in "love" with that Appy mare!

I have also heard that Seattle Slew was in love with a paint mare, and would not breed other TB mares unless he could see that paint mare. If you know anything about that, please post. There could be somewhere out there, some paints that are either sons or grandsons/daughters of Slew.

Sorry for a 2nd post, but I looked at that ad that was the second one you posted, and I did not see where that grandson of First Secretary is at. Do you have any way of finding out? How can we look up to find his offspring and their subsequent foals? I am looking for one that looks like that, and that grandbaby of his is a looker.

I know you know alot, so I'll bet you will know this as well!

Cool story and pics about First Secretary

I have to admit I'm not a lover of the normal appy colour...but I LURVE the blanket ones

Ambassador is the only horse I've owned of this colour/pattern..so I'm not very educated on how the gene works etc.

I have noticed that most appy's (the pattern not the breed..most are of unknown parentage over here) that I've met have very sparse mane and tails..why is this ?

Ambassador is Knabstrupper and has a lovely thick mane and tail...is there a difference in the apps and knabs?..or is it just pot luck whether they have a thick mane/tail or not?

I'll scan some things maybe tonite, if not tomorrow. I have a copy of his Canadian registration papers sent to me by the ApHC of Canada, many years ago, some ads, and my report on him. I have not updated it, just don't have the time to do so now.

BacK to FIRST SECRETARY...He was an OK sire, I think people expected a lot more out of him. Some of his foals were in the sport horse industry, so I don't have all that information. Someplace I do have a copy of a photo of him when he was an aged horse...in or close to his 20's

Thank you for the info. so far on First Secretary! What a looker he was. As I said, my fav. Appy is the chestnut with the snowflake pattern on the rump. So pretty.

I have to say those palomino's at the beginning of this topic are some GORGEOUS horses, and that palomino Appy!! Wow! would love to have him. Lucky owner!

I'd love to find out where the sons/grandsons of First Secretary are. There's got to be some out there as he bred alot of mares. Jorge, you are a wonderful information sourse, and I thank you for that.

Kinda off topic, but does anyone know if Appaloosa racing is still going? I know when I was much younger it seemed to be popular but I have not seen them, even when they do the night time broadcasts from the Quarter Horse tracks. I love to watch the rare broadcasted Arabian races, talk about gorgeous horses on the track.....

Jorge, you want a cross breed almost TB, how bout this for a racer: A First Secretary colt bred to a chestnut copper colored TB mare with the white blaze, and for some flair, how bout a stallion of his bred to a chestnut Arabian mare? Now that's some good lookin' fantasy horses!

Thanks again, for the info! Secretariat Gold looks so much like First Secretary. Such absolutely gorgeous chestnut appys. I would love to own one of them from that line.

Hopefully some more pictures will show up and I know there was an old Appaloosa News magazine that had about a 5 page spread on First Secretary, somewhere out there someone has to have one yet. I had it, and I think it was damaged in a flood in my parents home years ago.
