Complete outcross in potential matings

Postby Pav » Thu Jan 28, 2010 9:07 am

I was interested in anyone's thoughts on having a complete outcross (no inbreeding within the first 5 generations) on a potential mating. It seems like most people talk about line-breeding and trying to double-up on certain bloodlines, but don't hear much about outcrosses. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Pav

My mare has double cross of Mr. P so I'm going as far away from him as possible. Now I did double up on ND with her second foal which she is carrying. I see nothing wrong with it, but I might be in the minority.

As I am admittedly internet challenged I hope this works. Suggest you take a look at http://werkhorse.com/pdf/2005_teamwerk.pdf.
Title of the article is Waiting to Exhale by Jack Werk. Just another piece of information that might help you.

There's an interesting blog post at http://classicchampionthoroughbreds.blogspot.com/2009/06/heres-another-pedigree-note-about.html that lists the inbreeding found in the first 5 generations of the horses listed on Blood Horse's top 100 thoroughbreds of the 20th Century.

What's interesting is though Secretariat has no inbreeding in the first five generations, in the sixth and seventh generations there's tons of it - see pedigree at http://www.sport-horse-breeder.com/secretariat.html According to the Sport Horse Breeder web site that's a mark of a stamina pedigree. http://www.sport-horse-breeder.com/pedigree-study.html

Just more theories to explore
