OCD in hock, experience?

Postby Dave C » Wed Mar 03, 2010 7:42 pm

One of my fillies was diagnosed with OCD in her hock. Does anyone have any experience with the surgery? The vet told me the prognosis is very good for this type of OCD.

Depending on the size of the OCD and the age of the filly, the prognosis may be good. Sometimes a conservative approach, i.e. OCD pellets or calcium supplementation, will resolve the problem. Not all OCD's seen in radiographs cause problems. I would get a second opinion before committing to surgery.

A 3yo filly, diagnosed because it is a problem, persistent swelling, very mild lameness. I've already talked to a couple of vets, just curious about whether someone here had dealt with the problem before.

It is a pretty common procedure. If your vet is encouraged and your surgeon is encouraged then I wouldn't hesitate to be optimistic as well (they are normally reserved and reluctant to give a positive prognosis unless they are very confidant). I've seen several over the years recover well from OCD surgery. The important thing is that she going to have the surgery because if it is causing a problem now it will likely only get worse if nothing is done.

Best of luck to you!

I had one and had arthroscopic done in 2008. He came out of it fine and is currently racing in Arizona. Recovery included 30 days stall rest. Then progressive paddock size change. A cortisone/HA injection in the hock approx 10 days to 2 weeks after surgery and the 7 shot adequan series starting I believe a week after surgery.

Success or failure of the surgery depends on the severity and location of the OCD lesions.
