Apparently those who use it believe otherwise.

And they actually train horses, not theorize about them.

Who be "they"? Are you implyng that many NJ trainers are cheating? And vodka is the best they can do?

I'm not implying anything. It's apparent you know nothing about training horses, but I thought you could at least read.

As I suspected, when it comes to actual experience, either you have the experience or you do not. It appears you do not have any actual experience with vodka. If you have any personal experience with vodka then tell us about it otherwise this exchange just becomes another pooled ignorance forum with no actual basis in fact.

Barn31, You are aware that HpKingjr is a real owner, not just someone with horses at home like me? If that's the way you talk to owners it's not surprising you are using a tag line to beg for clients on a message board. Yes I'm not surprised HPK doesn't know about vodka administered IV in a receiving barn, honest people don't usually know the ins/outs of what cheaters do. Answering a post with alittle humor is widely accepted, rudeness is not.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Maybe you jumped into this discussion somewhere in the middle.

I offered my knowledge on the subject (it was requested by the person who started the thread).

Here's what I got:

"50 cc's of vodka is basically one shot. The standard shot glass holds 1 and 1/2 ozs. of liquor or 45 cc's. How anyone could think that one shot of vodka would have any calming effect on an animal that weighs 6 times the average person is interesting. If memory serves me, my average date in college could drink four or five drinks and was still a worthy opponent, possessed of all her wiles and wits.

One drink? Just stupid."

I don't know where you come from, but in my neck of the woods, it's rude to call someone stupid. So, maybe you ought to chastise Mr King for rudeness, especially since he's the one who started it.

Now, if Mr King had no knowledge of "vodka administered IV in a receiving barn", as you contend, maybe he should have kept his uninformed opinions to himself, rather than trash someone who does have some knowledge on the subject.

As far as begging goes, you should know my motto is "don't beg, don't kiss ass, and don't hang around where you're not wanted"

Now that's what I've been looking for in a trainer.. One that will tell me I'm stupid and have no knowledge of horses, or vodka.

It's actually Dr. King, since he is not just a horse owner, but also a veterinarian. I would trust his opinion on the effects of that amount of vodka, plus his opinion re the timing and method of its effectiveness.

Maybe an earlier poster hit the nail on the head, then.

The trainer who got a year suspension for vodka must have been making jello shots in the receiving barn 40 min. before the race.

I guess they were just getting the celebratory drinks ready in case they won the race....

What was I thinking when I offered my explanation?

The jello shot explanation makes much more sense....

As for the jello shots? We all knew bdw was adding humor, he has 5500 posts, most of us know him a wee bit from those 5500 posts. If the topic is handicapping he's 99% serious. Barn31 he's also something of a successful techie with a few bucks who eventually will be an owner requiring a trainer. Crystal or JessiP or another one of our people involved in sales will find a deal too good to pass up. I must retract my statement about you looking for business on this board as it does occur. It doesn't happen over night though, it happens after getting to know each other. You having ~80 posts might want to tread alittle softer because many of the people here are east coasters who might wind up racing in Jersey.

So Barn 31 since you claim to have experience with vodka, knowledge on the subject AND know the proper dosage for vodka given IV apparently you have used it yourself on your horses. Care to elaborate on its efficacy? Care to share your name as trainer?

Being a snide jerk on a bulletin board with many of your fellow horsemen is not the best way to garner yourself new clients, no matter how much knowledge or experience you claim to have.

I think the use of vodka as a calming agent is the backside version of an urban legend. Everyone knows someone who knows someone, but few have ever done it, witnessed it done, or know someone first hand that actually did it.

I have heard the stories too. Do I know if they are true? No. If they are true, do I know if vodka actually works as intended? No. Do I believe people do this from time to time? Yes.
