Interesting read, I wonder thought about where they talk about a chestnut sire having chestnut and bay foals. I know a bay stallion who has been bred to bay/ dark bay/ brown mares and they have chestnut foals. I always thought you needed two chestnuts to have a chestnut, or at least one :)

If the bay stallion and bay mare both carry a copy of the red gene then they can produce a chestnut foal even though they aren't chestnut.
A chestnut stallion will have a bay foal if the bay mare he's bred to carries two black genes or if the foal inherits one red gene from the sire and one black gene from the dam

Thanks for the info, that makes sense. I suppose then I have a liklihood of obtaining a chestnut foal as my mare's sire is chestnut, though the stallion's parents are both bay/brown etc he seems to throw chestnut half the time with bay/brown mares.

Yup it'll be a straight 50-50 in your case.

How funny- I was drawing Punnett squares in my head as I read that article. I'm ready for my biology final next week. Thanks, Color Corner!

When I read that article, these two
questions came to my mind:

● Have you noticed that the grey, Cee’s Tizzy (sire of Tiznow) possess certain noticeable less than optimum ability to produce good grey male runners vis-à-vis his excellent proficiency in producing excellent non-grey males?

● Do you think that the talented grey Aussie Rules will become one of the best 5 sires coming from his dominant sire ---who is not very well known for his greys?
