Little early to be calling smarty a "dismal failure"

He is sitting right now at #17 on the General sire list

Lifetime winning pecentage is 18% for his starters.

He's got a Kentucky Derby Contender in Backtalk.

Smarty should be in the Kentucky Horse Park with Cigar.

hi Elusive City

It may sound a bit harsh, but...considering the quality and quantity of opportunity afforded Smarty (at stud), and his lack of accomplishment (as a racehorse sire)...it may be a dead-on description.

:? Kentucky Derby contender  :? . Seems (to me anyway) Backtalk may be better described as a KyDerby pretender.

I guess you won't be betting him in the Illinios Derby on April 3

He's going to run big there. :D

I agree, Elusive City.

But I guess most people would rather rush to judgement than give a horse a chance to prove himself.

Ooops I was wrong Backtack is running in the LA derby this Saturday.

Guess Amoss didn't want to ship him.

oh well fish or cut bait time for Backtalk.

Contender or Pretender. we'll know after the race on Saturday.

What JonServido was pointing out I think is that people are confusing this LA Derby starter named "Backtrack" with the Smarty Jones horse "Backtalk". Backtalk is likely still pointed to the IL Derby.

For what it is worth, I dont think Smarty is a "dismal failure" at stud. I think his first sale weanlings averaged a nice profit for those who spent $100,000 on breeding to him. The year his stud fee went to Private Treaty was what scared off the buyers. He may not have had major 2yo runners, and from what I understand, they (Smarty foals) shouldn't be pushed into 2yo runners... but as far as winners/runners, he is doing pretty darn well this year! His progeny earnings would put him number 1 on the PA Sire list, and I, for one would love to stand him here!

Also, March has been a HECK of a month for Smarty...

In 11 days of racing (from March 13 through Mar 23), Smarty had a remarkable little streak going: 21 races, 11 wins (52%), 16 ITM (76%), and estimated earnings of $390,050.

Since this was posted, Smarty had another winner that I know of at Oaklawn today... named Hey Smarty.
