Keeneland Opening day

Postby Crystal » Fri Apr 02, 2010 10:27 am

well I'm impressed. I just came in from lunch after driving around Lex with my radio blaring and enjoying this 80 degree weather.. I cruzed down Versailles Rd and was shocked at the amount of traffic outside gate 1 at Keeneland. I have only seem that much traffic on 4th of July weekend heading past the Ma/NH tolls!
Cars of pumped horse racing fans are lined up past the exit of New Circle Rd. I'm glad I just did a drive by, but damn part of me wanted to GO!

I've been there in the mornings and I like that so much more than battling the crowds in the afternoon. Especially in this weather, I'm sure the UK girls in their barely-there sundresses are out in force. One of our exercise riders is French and he's been looking foward to girl watching on opening day for weeks.

From what I have seen so far, It's a pretty Skin-tastic day to be a college student at Keeneland. Where's the $20 unlimited beer???

It was hard for me to get any work done today. After each race, I'd do some work and rush back for the next one. Then after the eighth race, one of the mares decided she wan't going to cooperate w/me as I trimmed her hooves. I missed the feature. Tommorrow, I'm going to be in front of TV from 1 PM on.

There was real excitement in the air at Keenland. You could feel it.

The combination of beautiful weather and Good Friday was enough to set a new spring opening day record.

We were driving past Keeneland on Versailles a bit after 6pm. Tons of traffic and several very drunk college kids who were wandering around in the middle of Versailles - not sure if they were crossing or just greeting cars. They looked lovely, however.... Cars were honking & people seemed to be having fun...very festive.

I'm really surprised someone didn't scoop up those college kids and get them out of the road. When Keeneland lets out, there are police controlling traffic at both gates that open onto Versailles Rd. Also it would be unusual to cross the road on foot there as there's nothing on the other side but the end of the airport runway.

Yes, "unusual" was the right word! They were truly aimless, but clearly having a great time. They were on the road between gates with no security near them.
