That's sad news indeed. I saw her break her maiden in person at Belmont Park, and count her as my all-time favorite, hands down. RIP, Personal Ensign...one of the greatest racemares ever.

I remember watching her close on the outside nailing Winning Colors on the wire at Churchill Downs in the mud on a dark cold day like it was yesterday.

It surely is a sad day! I too feel old, I remember rooting for her in the races I saw her in too.

It was a great time, she was a wonderful mare......I remember how upset her connections were when the track was going to be off....she never liked the off going yet overcame it to keep her perfect record in tact. Watch this video and re-live her courage defeating the Kentucky Derby winner (Winning Colors) in the process......TJ

I'm feeling old today...I remember her race in the Distaff. Amazing mare. She was a champ through and through.

Same here! The '88 BC Distaff is still one of my favorite races to rewatch.

Pesronal Ensign created race fans. I am one of them. My deep involvement in the industry now probably had some foundation in the way she won the Distaff. Long before Zenyatta, she was an emblem for perfection and those fans like me who were outsiders to racing, who knew no one in the sport and had no "in", she was so inspiring that nothing after that could keep fans like me away from the sport. I do mourn her, but I also celebrate along with many of you what she helped bring into our lives and to the sport of racing.
