Jackson Bend
is the darkest chestnut I have ever seen. I was convinced he was a brown, even in a close up shot. To my eye it doesn't look "livery", either.
Comments? Explanations? Or is shade totally not genetically passed on?

I suggest coining the term "root beer chestnut".
Very odd, huh? He doesn't have the orangy or even pinkish tints (usually around the tail base, I've noticed) that liver chestnuts have. he's not a slight liver chestnut like Smarty Jones, who is also pretty dark, nor the caramel that whywhywhy has and throws.
Can you tell I like shades?

I just have a mare here to be bred, she is looking like him and color but she is a smoky black. Looks like in between black and the darkest chestnut you can imagine.

It's certainly possible Xfactor. I have zero doubt he's not been color tested. However I have never seen a liver/black chestnut be liver at birth. They are nearly always just red. So I'm guessing his foal coat made it obvious he is red. I will be seeing him in person in a day or two and I'll let you know if I can tell anything, but I suspect it will be more apparent in person.

Great color photo.
I'd really like to have him color tested and see what is really going on. Wouldn't be surprised to find that he's a cream carrier. Or that there is a undiscovered modifier that works on red. Something like sooty, that changes the overall shade of the horse.
Or perhaps what is going on is how the pigment is placed in the hair shaft. Which has popped up in some of the Domino line horses.
In any event he's a lovely color.

I think that the golden palomino has been selected out of the TB gene pool. (Historically) And the cream gene that is left is linked to some type of modifier that creates a very dark coat color. Every once in a while there is a cross over, the linkage is lost and suddenly there is a golden palomino.
If you look at the damline of Milkie, you will see a whole collection of mares described as dark bay/brown. Jackson Bend doesn't have quite as many of these dark bay/brown mares in his bottom line, but there are a few.
Makes me wonder about smoky blacks.
On the other hand he could just have the modifier which darkens the base coat--liver is a good term for it--and he does look like some of the dark, dark chestnut horses.
Would be interesting to know for sure.
