As of 8:30 ET, Eskendreyea is scratched from the Ky Derby due to unexplained filling in his left front leg. Stories in DRF and BH.

Where there is smoke there is fire and thankfully this issue has gone beyond the point of another Derby Day scratch. When cheap claimers move like he does then you work around those issues and keep them happy running in the lower ranks, you cannot do that with a horse about to be put to the sword against the best 3yr olds around. It's too bad as the horse is an obvious talent and perhaps he will become another Quality Road with time to mend. We need some top class older horses in the mix.

Anyone here observe anything amiss?

Good call :!:

In the press conference today, the trainer mentions he didn't like Eskendereyea's last couple of gallops. IMHO, that would have been a red flag for the vet to go over him thoroughly and to keep a daily eye on him. Overnight swelling from ankle to knee, when a horse has not gone to the track, would make me suspect this is a serious, potentially career ending injury; not something comparable to a human's sprained ankle.

A big question in my mind is why they are waiting until next week to perform diagnostics. Generally, xrays for fractures and ultrasound results of tendon/ligament injuries are independent of swelling. Surgery is sometimes delayed a day or so post racing to allow the stress hormones to normalize, but that's not the case here. What happens if Eske has a nondisplaced fracture, might it not displace because of insufficient immobilization? Does anyone have a clue why they're waiting with such a valuable horse?

So they can retire him?

Just read on another forum there has been rumor of a suspensory problem for weeks. Allegedly the barn lameness vet had been visiting daily. If there was only a little filling, and they were hoping for a miracle with the overnight treatment, you would have to wonder if that treatment caused the leg to blow up from ankle to knee. Your thoughts?

Despite it being a business, Zayat genuinely seems to care about doing right by the horses

My hope too is that Eskend will be fine and back to the races. He certainly has shown he has some class.

swelling from the knee to the ankle ,rough lead changes ,certainly sounds like a suspensory that is deteriorating. If he were a gelding and had six months rest with a blister or similar counter irritant then he may be fine, but this is a colt with a great record and will stand next year I firmly believe.

Let's not exaggerate. That isn't a GREAT record. He's had 2 very good races against not particularly wonderful opposition. This is one of the poorest crops I've ever seen, and I date back as a fan to the mid 60's. Now, there's going to be a fairly miserable classic season. It's going to be what's left of nothing much. Races have been won by horses that run in them. Most of the 3 year olds this year are distance challenged. The majority want no more than a mile, even the best of what's left. The ones with the distance ability don't combine it with the speed.

Relax Prado the poor beast can only beat up whoever lines up against him. a la Zenyatta. Considering he hacked up in the Wood with a dodgy leg I would say he's a very nice horse. He survived Pletcher long enough to be Derby favourite ,he will do for me. Sure it's bad year for colts so was last year but it ended up being an interesting time. We got spoiled for a long time by the likes of Slew, Affirmed, The Bid and later Easy Goer and Sunday Silence. It's ordinary years that make us sense greatness when it appears., hope it's not too long coming.

Well, I did say very good races. I'm just not anointing him the second coming. Calling him great is a bit much. It doesn't take much against this crop.
