Who was the 2 horse in the Vainty?

Postby Shannon » Wed Jul 28, 2010 5:33 pm

Anyone know the name of the 2 horse in the vanity Handicap Zenyatta won? I just watched the video on YouTube, and she looks like she has horrid conformation. Her left front looked like it would give out at any time. Anyone seen her in live form?

That was St. Trinian's......she went in for repairs after that race and won't face Zenyatta the rest of the year. TJ

From a Daily Racing Form article by Steve Andersen from March 2010:

ARCADIA, Calif. - What on Earth is this?

That was the sort of thought that went through trainer Mike Mitchell's mind when St Trinians arrived at his barn in early 2009. The filly from England had a promising race record, and did not cost much, but had terribly crooked legs, the kind that scare a veteran trainer such as Mitchell.

When he finally saw her gallop, Mitchell was aghast.

"Her hind legs go to the right and her front legs go to the left," he said.

The action is not pretty, but it sure does work. St Trinians has won her first four starts in the United States, including the Grade 2 Santa Maria Handicap at Santa Anita last month. Mitchell is so confident in St Trinians's ability that she will start in Saturday's $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap in an attempt to become the first female to win the historic race. To win the Grade 1 race at 1 1/4 miles, she must beat a full field of males.

Describing her conformation, Mitchell describes St Trinians as crooked from "everywhere from the knees down."

"Everyone on top of her says she feels fine," he said. "She wings her legs."

The first time I saw her move, she reminded me of an old fashioned egg beater....things were spinning but nothing ever made contact:>) But above those crooked legs she's all heart....hope she comes back well after her time off. TJ

No, but conformation does govern how long they stay sound. A bad mover can take the added strain on their joints and tendons just so long.

Exactly El Prado and when they earn money like she has it means she'll spend years as a broodmare and heaven only hopes whoever has her will keep her comfortable. That's if she survives the track (and that trainer).

Isn't the old saying "pretty is as pretty does"? I don't think we need to worry about a safe future for old St. Trinians. It sounds like she's earned a pretty penny, and as a graded winner, she'll always have value as a broodmare.

She obviously has great talent, and heart, but as stated above, how long can she stay sound? I'd hope she gets retired early, before she breaks down. I've seen horses crooked as anything run like stink...but I haven't seen one last a rigourous racing career. And they usually pass on the crooked too.
