Weird running in your own race. Zenyatta wins the Zenyatta!

anyone know if that's ever happened before, a horse running in it's own race?

Hi Timex,
Good question....I've been around a long time and can't remember this happening before. The headlines will be confusing...Zenyatta Sets Record in Zenyatta. TJ

Maybe the Zenyatta will be the undoing of Zenyatta.

When she's ready for green pasture she'll let them know w/ no disappointment on her part. She wins for fun 2 more outs then becomes queen of her pasture perfect 20 for 20.

Well, BDW had me somewhat optimistic thinking that maybe some of the top West-based 3-yr-old fillies would take her on. But it looks like Blind Luck and Evening Jewel are both racing this coming weekend... :?

I wish Zenyatta's connections would at least consider the Goodwood...

WTF?

Weird. I'm not sure why the race should be renamed in the first place, or really, why all this stakes renaming happens all the time, anyway. And why the hurry on this one, when the bloody horse is still running?

Don't they think it is weird, and potentially embarrassing, or even potentially humiliating, to the horse that they are trying to honor? And who would dare to even take a chance of humiliating this good horse? My god, what if she loses it, or worse, breaks down in the race? Not to be morbid, but it it's a f-ing horse race, and as we know it happens to best of them... And can you imagine the publicity if something like this did happen in the renamed, much touted and headlined Zenyatta stakes race? Horse racing is one bad nationally televised breakdown from total public banishment, any way, and I think something like this would bring the whole sport down in flames.

Seems like a dishonor, to me.

I can only guess that there is a payoff for somebody, somewhere in this stunt and the others like them. I have no idea who, how, or why, but it has to have something to do with money.

What gives???

Freshman, they named it the Zenyatta Stakes after Z. "officially" retired last year. I'm sure they jumped the gun so that they could get first dibs naming a race after her, but it did make them look silly when she was un-retired.

Didn't Rachel already win the Lady's Secret this year?

Rachel's was an ungraded race at Monmouth. This is a GrI at Hollywood.

Tongue is firmly in cheek here (as above), but if doubling up on names here is okay then what's stopping Ellis Park from running their own Kentucky Derby?
