Santa Anita going back to dirt

Wooohooo! Why do I get the feeling they're setting off fireworks all over California right now? Maybe these remarks:

The reaction among the crowd of some 150 people seemed upbeat across the board.

"I agree with everything he said 100%," said Jerry Moss, a prominent horse owner who campaigns unbeaten two-time champion Zenyatta and serves on the CHRB. "I like his 'big bet' idea."

"It was music to my ears," Racing Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert said of Stronach's dirt announcement.

If only we could've had Zenyatta spending a year on CA dirt. Oh well, things are still looking up. I'm excited! 8)

Hi Heidi,
It's a start and the best thing that could happen to California racing. The West coast will no longer be at a disadvantage when they have a nice 3YO considering a run for the roses. I sure hope this will be approved and the rest follow suit. TJ

This is interesting.NOW how will the top sires compare. HOW will the IN Excess's, Tribal Rules excell? Its an interesting twist in Ca Horse racing now which sires and horses will excell on the dirt at S.A.?

Well BDW I think it would serve you best to rethink the fresh new sires and sires that have been doing better on the dirt than synthetics.
Since you and I are new- I would think outside of the box.

Lets all hope the surface they put in doesnt have horses being hauled off the track in the meat wagon every other day.

i have a pretty good idea of what sires are dirt and which are not. i play socal on a daily basis and have for 2 years now straight.

in excess, benchmark and betrando (if they aren't retired) are going to go back up, tribal rule and unusual heat are going to tumble to some extent, espically unusual heat, no horse in america has benefited to the extent that unusual heat has with synethics. easily the best synethic horse in the country

i would look for a sire like storm boot to make a presence as well as some of the new sires as well that were retired right when the mandate was made.

Storm Boot is dead, you know. You must be thinking of one of the other gazillion Storm Cat's in CA. And I wouldn't lay Tribal Rule to rest just yet. Some of his synthetic runners look like they would like the dirt, and many love the grass.

At this point I am just glad for a return to dirt. Hope Golden Gate makes a dirt switch very soon as well. I know some of the gang at GGF and they tell me maintaining the synthetic is nothing like advertised ..

I guess nobody remembers why Cali went to synthetics in the first place. Horses were dying at an alarming rate and the horsemen were livid and screamed that something be done. So now all of a sudden " new " dirt is the answer?
Id like someone, anyone to show me an article from pre synthetic saying how great the tracks in So Cali were, as I recall Stronach wouldnt even race his own super horse at Santa Anita because of the track.

If you want to be a historian, what did California do the 75 years before the synthetics? Dirt just went bad the 5 years before Pro Ride and became unusable west of the Rockies? Was it sunspots or solar flares?

The truth is Del Mar was what people pointed to and its still got problems. Santa Anita was good before the base deteriorated and the dirt became like a science experiment with weird things like wood chips and shavings added in the mix for heavens know what reason. A cheer went up from the horsemen --at least the vast majority of them--when the announcement was made and no doubt they have a reason to cheer. Of course, this all assumes that the dirt track is put in correctly and we get a quality product to run on.

And lets not forget the gamblers. I know a couple of professionals who just hate the synthetics because they feel it is not formful. Whether they are right or wrong, the handles of the synthetic tracks have reflected that feeling among many.
