I suspect no one's in any hurry to put the bad news out there.

Thanks for the update, Fireslam! :)

Perhaps they were waiting, like an old maid, in hopes of late reports/better news? Like some folks forgot to turn in a few thousand mares?

I am interested in how many mares Congrats bred this year. Our mare could never get in when she needed to. She was cycling naturally and when you are competing with mares that have been prostined and are booking 5 days out or more AND they have overbooked the horse, you are SOL.

I can only imagine what next season will be like. He's a nice horse, but if your mare can't get bred at the right time (or something close), there is no point. I would rather go to a horse that is well managed and the office knows what they are doing. Now the owner has mares in town going to him - how do you think the public's mares are going rate?

I don't mean to suggest this is unique to Congrats or the Vinery. It certainly isn't. The use of reproductive drugs is widespread and the overbooking of a popular stallion is common. Those of us in Florida are between a rock and a hardplace, due to the fact we are sorely lacking in quality stallions, but if we can't get the mare bred, we are out of business and that may not be a bad thing.

Last year, the ROMB was released on Oct. 22, so they aren't late as of yet.

How am I supposed to get anything done now? This is fascinating reading!

Looks like the stallions who got big books in the past are still getting them and there's still tremendous demand for unsound and semi sound sons of Unbridled's Song.

There was still--and will be this year--a lot of competition to get to the good horses. There may be fewer mares being bred but they're all concentrating on the same stallions.

Number of mares bred in Pa. actually dropped a tad from 2009. Also, only four Pa. sires had books of 50 or more mares: Jump Start (115), Fairbanks (77), Toccet (62) and Talent Search (57).

Some notable small books among Pa. stallions: Action This Day (13), Real Quiet (24), Lite the Fuse (11), Siphon (14).

I reached out to McMahon about Touch Gold. His fee is 10K again and his book will fill up fast. I'm just not prepared to commit now or next week.

What's the reasoning that market breeders opt for these "bad wheel" studs? There is no genetic correlation between soundness and being slow afoot. Does speed trump soundness in the delicate juvenile TB market? Where did stamina and durability go in perpetuating a solid stallion line? COMMENTS ANYONE?

All I can say is they prefer the prettiest and the one's most ready to run NOW not next week, next month or heaven forbid next year.

I was surprised to see in Maryland that Two Punch bred more mares than Not for Love. Not for Love is arguably, the best stallion outside of Kentucky and, although a nice stallion, I had heard that, due to his age, Two Punch was having some fertility problems.
