Sad to see Mine That Bird end on such a low note, after such a poor year why not put him in a spot to build some confidence, would it killed them to run in a listed stakes, or after the Woodward defeat run on Breeders’ Cup weekend in the Ack Ack.
I remember how nice it was to see Funny Cide to go out on top.

Mike, "going out on top/winner" his connections put him in a position to win. Finger Lakes, Wadsworth Memorial Handicap maybe not the most glamorous but he went out a winner.
And I remember my Funny Cide, Birdstone bet, that's why I bet once a year, and I've already blew my win place bet in a 4 horse field so I've called it quits till next year.

His retirement has been announced.

Normally I would agree - he's been guilty of that before - but I'm thinking this one was more the owners' call. A day or two before the BC he was being interviewed on TVG, and basically said that while MTB was training well, "he'll really need to step up" to win. Which is Lukasese for 'hasn't got a snowball's chance in hell'.
I almost felt bad for DWL, which is a new one for me. Feeling bad for MTB...that, I've grown accustomed to. Hopefully he has a long & happy retirement.

He was a precocious 2 yr old and held that advantage the first half of his 3 yr old season catching a wet track to his liking in the Derby then running a very impressive 2nd to the next HoY Rachel in the Preakness. He wasn't very big and was crooked in front but had a touch of class. I am sure that he will show up somewhere in the near future on the N.M. circuit and then he will be dragged out to open some new shopping plaza for a fee somewhere out there. He was a good story around Triple Crown time and I wish the little guy well.
I bet part of the retirement process was to get the horse away from Lukas without insulting or embarrassing him. Lukas IMO, managed the horse just awful. Raced him completely over his head from day one. Never even looked for a confidence building spot for that poor horse. Just threw him to the lions race after race.
Don't be surprised to see MTB back in training next year with Chip Wooley with some sort of spin that he wasn't happy standing in a pasture.
Anyone notice now that Lukas doesn't have 250 head of babies to go through every year he develops nothing? BTW, what ever happened to Dublin??
