Bernardini first out winner claimed for 15K

Postby DDT » Wed Nov 17, 2010 4:50 pm

Great Exuma (Bernardini x Elusive Diva) won today in the 1st at Churchill and was claimed from the Snowdens for 15K. It was his first start. I do not know what he looked like but Mott had him ready to run the mile and a sixteenth. His dam was a G3 stakes winner with multiple G2 placings and earned over 400K. She sold at KeeNov 2006 in foal to Distorted Humor for 1.6M. Have to keep track of this one, but it surely looks like it might be a very good claim.

Maybe they had been hoping that someone would think there was something wrong and not put in a claim.

More likely they KNOW there is something wrong and they were overjoyed to get one win purse from him and to be able to unload him for 15K.

Doesn't have to be a soundness issue that puts him at risk from running, could be an airway issue where they know his potential is limited. A good horse with an airway issue can sometimes still win if you run them cheap enough.

I'd be pretty surprised if this one went on to be something more than what he is now.

These aren't dumb connections that lost this horse.

Well, upon further inspection his works did not light up the board and Mott's winning percentage with first time starters is low but with his breeding you would think his odds would have been lower than 12-1. The connections have been successful in this game and I agree that there had to be a reason they started him off in a 15K maiden claimer. The track was listed as good and the time was nothing special, but still, if there is a problem and it can be overcome, who knows. The main reason I posted the info was because it reminded me of Lord Of The Game, Bluegrass Cat's half brother by Saint Ballado who was claimed out of his winning first start for 10K and went on to bank over 500K.

Kind of like that swaybacked Storm Cat colt that still sold well at Kee Sep...
